Greeley Recycl;ing Center Closing-Too Expensive to Operate

Greeley's only recycle center is closing because of high costs. Gallegos Sanitation Inc. says the cost to collect and transport plastics, glass, cardboard and other materials outweighs what it can earn by selling them. The Greeley Tribune reports the cost has also increased because many people are misusing the site, dropping off electronics and other waste that cannot be recycled at the center. Greeley officials are posting signs warning people who dump their trash at illegal dump sites that they could get a municipal citation if they are caught.

Magpul Makes Good on Departure Threat

One of the country's largest makers of gun magazines is leaving Colorado and moving operations to Wyoming and Texas because of new gun laws. Magpul Industries announced today that it's moving production, distribution and shipping operations to Cheyenne and its headquarters to Texas, making good on a vow it made to leave Colorado during last year's heated gun control debate. The Democratic-led Legislature approved and Gov. Hickenlooper last year signed a new law prohibiting the sale of gun magazines with more than 15 rounds.

Gun Control Item Could Make 2014 Ballot

Colorado's gun control debate could be headed to the ballot. A group of gun-control supporters got permission today to seek a 2014 ballot measure that would ban concealed weapons on college campuses. It comes a year after the state Legislature debated but didn't pass a ban on concealed weapons on college campuses. Concealed weapons are already banned at K-12 schools. The ballot measure would add public colleges and universities. Supporters have six months to gather about 86,000 signatures to put it on the ballot. Colorado and Utah are the only states where concealed weapons are allowed on college campuses.

The Silver Queen Gondola on Aspen Mountain is open for the new year. After being closed for mechanical reasons on three of the busiest days of the season, the gondola opened for business,Thursday. The Aspen Times reports the reason for the malfunction is under investigation.

Health officials say Colorado is in the throes of one of the worst flu seasons since 2009. State epidemiologist Lisa Miller says the number of hospitalizations has jumped to 448 this flu season, more than 50 cases higher than the year before. A large number of those hospitalized are young adults. According to KCNC-TV flu season has not peaked yet, but there is still plenty of vaccine available.

Administrative changes, elections, and high water flooded the news in 2013. But none was a bigger news story than the September flooding. Heavy rains along the Front Range traveled down the South Platte river, flooding its banks and causing havoc for homes and businesses in its path. Evacuations were issued for the towns of Merino, Atwood, Crook, and parts of Sterling. Part of the collateral damage was the City of Sterling’s sewer plant, triggering about a 10-day no flush order, which nearly shutdown the city. Residents in Logan County hope the New Year will be kinder, as residents strive to recover from an economic impact that continues to haunt the community.
