Phone service at Northeastern Junior College was out for most of the day yesterday. An unexpected failure of power lines and communications lines in the area was blamed for the problem. People were, however still able to communicate using email. Phone service was restored shortly after 12-a..m. this morning.

First Lady Michelle Obama was in Colorado today. She spoke at Arapahoe High School before an enthusiastic standing room only crowd; then later at The Creative Arts Building at The Colorado State Fairgrounds in Pueblo. Both stops were designed to drum up grass roots support for her husband's re-election campaign. Colorado is considered a key battleground state in the November election.

Greeley Mosquitos Carry West Nile Virus

For the first time since the 1980's, Greeley has funded a mosquito control program this year...and it couldn't have come soon enough. Last week, a mosquito pool trap near Linn Cemetery tested positive for West Nile Virus. No human illness due to West Nile has been reported yet, but finding infected mosquitos this early could mean a bad summer for West Nile activity. Greeley has allotted 50-thousand dollars for mosquito control this summer.

Log Lane Mosquito Control

The Log Lane Village summer mosquito control program is up and running. Spraying is planned for Thursday nights, assuming the weather and wind conditions are acceptable. The insecticide being used this year is not dangerous to pets, according to a Log Lane Village Public Works spokesperson.

High Park Fire Update

The High Park Fire in Larimer County has grown to over 65,000 acres. Emergency officials say the fire is currently 55-percent contained. There are over 1,900 firefighters, 118 engines and 17 helicopters battling the blaze. The estimated cost of fighting the High Park Fire has risen to over $17 million. Earlier this morning, fire officials issued an all-clear for Soldier Canyon and Mill Canyon Estates and power has been restored to those communities. So far, the fire has consumed 189 homes and claimed one life.

Overlay Projects Underway in Morgan and Logan Counties

The Colorado Department of Transportation is conducting a pair of overlay projects in Morgan and Logan counties. C-DOT spokeswoman Ashley Mohr says crews are resurfacing the asphalt on highways 52 and 71...






TAG: Mohr says speed limits through the work zones have been reduced and lane closures are expected to result in some delays. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the day Thursday.
