EDO Prepares for Next Month's Assessment

Its still about a month away, but a committee of community members, representing the Economic Development Organization (EDO), is getting ready for the upcoming Community Economic Development Assessment on October 28 and 29. The assessment is sponsored by the Colorado Office of Economic Development. The assessment will look at development in the future in Logan County and will be done by pros who meet with local leaders and the public in a learning process of the community. When its over, a report will suggest to community leaders what future development will look like. Those doing the assessment said the assessment isn't to tell the Logan County community how to do things, but a resource to help them decide what the future of the community will be.

Wiggins Water Project Won't Cost as Much as Thought

Households in Wiggins will pay only 60 dollars a month more for the town's water project, instead of 90 dollars a month. That's because the town, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will split the cost of the project 60-40, instead of right down the middle, after the USDA approved a grant and loan package for about 5.5 million dollars. The project will send water from a well just outside of town to improve the quality and quantity of water.

Early Voting Starts Soon

Early voting starts soon for those who will not be here on Election Day, November 2. Ballots for Morgan County residents who are in the military or otherwise not available to vote will get ballots soon, as they went out in the mail on Friday. Morgan County Clerk Connie Ingmire said early voting runs October 18 through the 29 at the county building voting machines on Ensign Street in Fort Morgan. Voters who want mail-in ballots should start seeing them in the mail around the 18th or 19th of October.

Maes Supporter Asks for Money Back AP

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes is embroiled in another campaign finance controversy, this time with a former supporter.

The latest issue is a $300 cash contribution from Freda Poundstone, a former backer who became disillusioned and abandoned her support for Maes.

She said the money was a personal gift to help Maes pay his $3,000-a-month mortgage, and she asked for it back after Maes claimed it was a campaign contribution that he mistakenly forgot to list on a campaign finance report.

He gave it back, in a check he wrote but did not sign.

Discussion on Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 at Fort Morgan Community College is Wednesday

We've told you about the opposition by numerous school boards and municipal governments opposing Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101, and now, The Morgan County Economic Development Corporation will hold a discussion on the issue this week. The "Know Your Vote" forum is Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Morgan Community College. Instead of bringing just one view of the amendments and the proposition, the evening's event will look at them from both sides: the pros and cons of being either for or against Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101.

Frenchman RE-3 Latest to Join Opposition

Another school district is showing its opposition to those funding issues that are on the ballot in November. Frenchman RE-3 Board of Education, like the others opposed, said that Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101 will drastically cut funding to their schools. In cutting taxes, those measures would cut the district's total per pupil funding by nearly 50 percent.

Sterling Library Now Open

The Sterling Library is open. It reopened last week as scheduled on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in the newly renovated part of the library. The new temporary entrance is on the south side of the building and will stay there until the whole project is finished. Patrons may park in the parking lot across from the library and on the side of the fire department. The after hours book drop is on the south side of the building at the end of the construction trailer. There's still lots more work to do, so library officials are still asking for your patience during the second phase of the renovations. During this phase, the library will continue to offer all library services. Library hours are Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Investigators Think Fires Are Related

Detectives are still looking for whoever started fires in rural Weld County over the weekend. They do say they have good leads though. Three separate fires were started west of Greeley on Saturday which almost destroyed a house. Another fire burned about a thousand acres and destroyed a house about 15 miles away on Thursday. Investigators are trying to figure out if the Kersey fire is at all related to the fires near Greeley.

Brush Board Opposes 60, 61 and 101

Brush School officials say they'd lose a significant amount of funding with Amendments 60 and 61 and Proposition 101, which is why the Brush Board of Education is opposed to this fall's ballot initiatives. While Coloradoans would get the tax breaks, funding for their schools would be cut drastically. One issue is that the per pupil dollars from the state would be cut from hundreds per student to just a few dollars per student. Other school related issues would also suffer under the measures.

Peetz Schools Oppose 60, 61 and 101

Peetz Plateau School Board is joining the clamor of those opposed to Amendments 60, 61 and Prop 101. Superintendent Ben Dutton said the district's funding would be cut by about 55 percent if the measures are passed by the electorate this fall. As we've told you with other school districts, the per pupil rate from the state would drop from hundreds of dollars to just a few dollars per student. Dutton said the district would lose all the way around.

Sugar Beet Dayd A Bit Success!

Last weekend's Sugar Beet Days were a success! That's the claim, anyway, from organizers of the annual event. There are already plans underway for next year's festival, with many of the more than one hundred vendors signing up to return next year. Organizers say as many as eight thousand people attended this year's weekend event on the grounds of the Logan County Courthouse. The Family Resource Center is the benefactor of the event, which was a new partner to the festival. The Sugar Beet Days Committee is already looking for volunteers for next year, so if you're interested, call the Sugar Beet Days phone, 970-580-6098.

Sterling Rec Center Registering Futur Michael Jordans!

The City of Sterling Recreation Center is currently accepting registrations for the 2010-2011 Youth Basketball Program. The program is available to boys and girls in the 2nd through 6th grades. There are separate divisions for boys and girls. Divisions of play include: 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade, 5th grade, and 6th grade.

Teams will begin practicing the week after Thanksgiving at the various elementary schools in Sterling and surrounding communities. Each team in the 2nd - 5th grade divisions will practice 1 - 1 1/2 hours per week. Teams in the 6th grade division may practice twice weekly. Practice times will vary between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, depending on school availability and coach’s schedules. Games
will begin Saturday January 8, 2011.

The registration fee of $30 per child includes approximately 10 practices, 6 games, and a team T-shirt. Participants are encouraged to register early, as a limited number of teams will be formed. Individuals registering late may not have their T-shirts available by the first game. The due date to register is Wednesday October 20, 2010. Registration forms
are available at the Recreation Center, 808 Elm Street; Recreation Office, upstairs at City Hall 421 N. 4th St., Sterling, Pro Sports, all RE-1 Elementary Schools, and Sterling Middle School.

Health Care Affordability Conference in Fort Morgan Today

There's a conference in Fort Morgan today the gage expanding Colorado's Medicaid system. The expansion comes under the Colorado Health Care Affordability Act and the state wants feedback on making Medicaid available to different groups of people. The conference is at the Clarion Inn today. Officials say the plan is to let more disabled working adults have the government's health insurance program.

People Looking for Work Feel Recession

New data released yesterday indicates that Colorado job seekers are still feeling the recession. Its from the state's Department of Labor and Employment that showed the seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate rose by two-tenths of one-percent to eight-point-two-percent during August. The number of state residents working fell to two-point-four-four million while the number of those looking for work rose by 27-hundred people. The unemployment rate rose in nine of Colorado's 64 counties.

Man Killed in ATV Crash Monday Night

Officials say an all terrain vehicle rider died last night. The Morgan County Coroner and the Sheriff's Department are investigating the crash that happened around 10:30 p.m. They said 26 year old Clinton J. Turley died in the emergency room of Colorado Plains Medical Center of injuries suffered in an all terrain vehicle crash on private property near #3 Trailside west of Fort Morgan.

Responders included the Morgan County Law Communications Center, Morgan county Sheriff Dept, Colorado State Patrol, Morgan County Ambulance and the Morgan county Coroner Office.

Sterling Correctional Facility Prisoner Paints Murals

Not all is negative at the Sterling Correctional Facility. NCEN reports that a Colorado inmate is using his skills to transform the prison walls into works of art. Michael Wentz stares at 85,000 feet of walls every day. He's been in prison here for 25 years and was asked by prison officials to put his energy, and art to good use. So he started painting the prison. Not like Sherwin Williams, but like da Vinci. Wentz spends 14 hours a day, making 60 cents an hour painting 15 murals, so far. Wenz is in for murder, kidnapping, robbery and more.

Broncos Wide Receiver Found Dead

For the third time in four years, the Denver Broncos are dealing with the death of a teammate. Wide receiver Kenny McKinley was found dead in his home Monday in an apparent suicide. Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said authorities were called to McKinley's home in Centennial where they found McKinley's body in the second-floor master bedroom. He said detectives believe the 23 year old McKinley was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Fourmile" Fire Most Expensive

The "Fourmile Canyon" Fire in Boulder will cost insurers the most of any wildfire in Colorado history. According to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, the wildfire's pricetag is 217-million dollars. That is almost four times the cost of the 46-million dollar Hayman fire in 2002. The 'Fourmile' blaze destroyed 169 structures, most of which were homes. It's also considered the seventh costliest disaster in state history behind wind and storm disasters.

Council Will Pass Resolution Today on 101, 60 and 61

Fort Morgan City Council will pass a resolution at its meeting tonight that will make official, the council's collective opinion of ballot initiatives regarding Constitutional Amendments 60, 61 and Proposition 101. Those issues would cut funding for several programs by cutting state spending.

Home Sealed for Cat Hoarding

A Greeley home is sealed off and declared unsafe after animal control officers found scores of cats inside. Officers removed 35 cats from the house and found several more dead cats in plastic bags in the back yard. In all, police expect to find as many as 60 cats inside the house, both living and dead. The 54-year-old resident was taken to a hospital for evaluation after he was found sleeping on the floor of the severely cluttered house. No charges have been filed as of yet.

Marostica: Colorado Looking at Tough Times

We've made it through the past couple of years because of the federal stimulus money, but Don Marostica, the director of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade said in Sterling last week that when the new governor comes in in January, he's looking a nearly 1.5 billion dollar budget cut in the face. He also said the state has had to borrow nearly half a billion dollars to cover the unemployment trust fund. He said the feds say they want that back too. Marostica said Colorado is looking at some tough times.

Nobody Hurt in Minor Crash

No one was hurt last week when a truck that Gordon Kahl of Sidney Nebraska was driving collided with William Kaiser's Ford Taurus. Kaiser's from Sterling. The crash happened at South Fifth and Columbine Streets in Sterling. Kahl told police there was a street sweeper westbound on Columbine that obstructed his view just before the collision. Kaiser confirmed the street sweeper, but Kahl was cited for not stopping at the intersection.

MCC Foundation/Cargill Pro-Am Golf Tournament Today and Tomorrow

The 11th annual MCC Foundation/Cargill Pro-Am Golf Tournament is set for today and tomorrow at the Fort Morgan Municipal Golf Course. The 2010 tournament is a two-day event for pro-am teams. The first day of play begins at 12:30 P.M. on Monday and the second day of play commences with a shotgun start at 8:00 A.M on Tuesday. The tournament proceeds benefit the MCC Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports Morgan Community College.

Played under a variable best ball format, each pro-am team of four is made up of one golf professional and three amateurs. There are still slots available for the event, according to Frasier. Players can contact the FMGC Pro Shop or visit the Morgan Community College website www.MorganCC.edu for registration details.

Sponsors, professionals, amateurs and their guests are invited to a social event at 6:00 P.M. after the first day of play. Morgan Community College Founders Room is the place for food and fun and a cash bar. A Calcutta auction will highlight the evening.

MCC Offers Tax Prep Classes

Morgan Community College is offering two classes for tax preparation, one this fall from October 6 through December 8 which allows for real world experience in preparing tax returns for others. The fall semester class meets on Wednesdays from 4 to about 6 P.M. The course includes the basics of tax code and how to prepare tax returns using professional tax software. Students can become IRS certified while earning two college credits. The other class is during the spring semester, from January through March.

The spring semester class, ACC 133, requires at least 30 hours of work in January--March at the free tax site at Morgan Community College preparing tax returns for lower-income families. Morris says this is a great experience for students wanting to enter the field of business s, for older adults as an encore career, or for anyone else who is eager to learn a new skill that can be used for public service or for hire.

The free tax preparation site, Tax Help Colorado, is made possible by the support of the Piton Foundation. Families who earn less than $52,000 annually are eligible for the service. Students who complete the fall course, pass the IRS certification exam, and apply their skills for Tax Help Colorado as a community service will have great additions to their résumés.

Colorado 31st on the Poverty List --Associated Press

Colorado is 31st on the poverty list. The state's poverty rate is 12.3 percent, two percentage points lower than the country's rate of 14.3 percent. Chris Watney is the president of the nonprofit Colorado Children's Campaign. She said the Census figures show that the number of children living in poverty in the state is "dramatically rising."

The Census will release more detailed economic data on Sept. 28 as part of its American Community Survey.

Sterling's Sugar Beet Days This Weekend

Sugar Beet Days is this weekend in Sterling! The annual arts and crafts festival is in its 30th year on the grounds of the Logan County Court House. The festival is tomorrow and Sunday and features food, entertainment, vendors, homemade crafts and rides. The hours on Saturday are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The festival is working this year with the Family Resource Center.

LifePoint Caught Off Guard

This week's announcement by Banner Health that it's building a new hospital between Fort Morgan and Brush has caught LifePoint off-guard. LifePoint operates Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan. Its C-E-O, Mike Patterson, says he was unaware of Banner's announcement of their plans to build a new state-of-the-art medical center between Fort Morgan and Brush. He goes on by saying C-P-M-C has been working with the Morgan County Healthcare Horizon Council over the last year to review the health care needs in the county. LifePoint and Banner had been in talks to join forces in building the new hospital. Those talks broke down last Friday.

Library Advisory Board Meets Monday

The Fort Morgan Library Advisory Board meets Monday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the Library's Community room. They'll be reviewing the library's policy statement. Keep in mind, even as the advisory board meets, the library itself will be in the middle of its move into the new part of its building. The library is set to reopen on the 22nd.

Groundbreaking for New Ft Morgan Municipal Airport Taxiway Next Week

It's a little over a week away, but the goundbreaking for the Fort Morgan Airport taxiway addition is coming up on the 23rd.It's at 4:30 p.m. at the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport. Mayor Terry McAllister will be there, celebrating a needed expansion project to the Fort Morgan Municipal Airport. The Taxiway expansion will facilitate new hanger development and increased utilization of this important public asset.

Police Looking for Alleged Vandals

Fort Morgan Officers are investigating a trespass and vandalism where about 400 dollars in damage was done to property. They say that on September 5th police were called to the 1200 block of East Burlington Avenue on the report of storage trailer that had been broken into. Inside the trailer were furniture, glassware and other household items.
The victim told police that the lock had been broken off of the trailer.
Police are looking for those responsible for breaking into the trailer and
causing the damage to the personal items and the case remains open. Police

Fourmile Fire Continues To Burn

Crews working on the "Fourmile Canyon" fire believe that blaze could be almost 80-percent contained by today. The fire that's been burning for a week, has consumed almost 65-hundred acres and revised figures indicate 166 homes have been destroyed. More than one-thousand firefighters were still assigned to the blaze that has already destroyed close to 80-million dollars in property and has cost seven-million dollars to fight.

Sterling City Council Meeting Tomorrow

Sterling City Council meets tomorrow at 7 p.m. in regular session. They'll talk about and vote on a liquor license renewal application for Ice Lanes on Norh 10th Avenue. They'll also hold a public hearing on a special events permit for the NJC Foundation's Plainsman Athletic Group on College Avenue. Council will take up about a dozen other items before an executive session.=

Man Arrested Twice on DUI Chages After Stealing Police Car

A northern Colorado man was quickly arrested twice for DUI: Once while driving his own car, the second time for stealing the police car as he waited to be taken in. Adam Segura was being held in Weld County Jail after a brief police chase Thursday. The Greeley Tribune says Segura was handcuffed and placed inside a Greeley police car after a DUI arrest. He managed to slip the cuffs in front of him and take off in the car while police officers interviewed a witness outside. Officers chased him for about a mile before he was arrested again.

State Economic Development Director in Sterling

The Director of Economic Development for the State of Colorado, Don Marostica will be in Sterling on Wednesday. He'll talk about what challenges the state faces in the current economy. The Rotary is hosting the meeting and everyone's welcome. This meeting is open to the public free of charge. People wishing to eat lunch, $10, should make reservations at Northeast 18 by Monday, 521-6888.

Water Main Installation on Cherry Street Starts Monday

Construction continues on Cherry Street. Starting Monday, September 13, and going on through Friday, September 17, the City of Fort Morgan will begin work to install a water main in Cherry Street. Sections of Cherry Street between Gateway Avenue and Burlington Avenue will be closed or have limited access. No parking signs and notifications will be posted throughout the project. Gateway and Burlington Avenues may also have temporary lane closures and slowing of traffic. You'll want to plan an alternate route if you normally use any of those streets to get where you're going.

DOC Officials, Residents Unhappy about "Minimum Risk" for Alward

While Sterling residents said at a meeting this week that they didn't understand why Douglas Alward was considered a minimum risk after he'd escaped three other prisons, Department of Corrections officials said they were angered about that too. Colorado's top prison official says an inmate escaped from a maximum security prison by grounding himself and crawling under an electric fence. State corrections chief Ari Zavaras told Denver's KUSA-TV that Douglas Alward used a homemade ladder to scale one fence and devised a way to bypass an electric fence that will stun someone on first contact and has enough electricity to kill anything that touches it twice. Zavaras declined to say how Alward grounded himself. The 48-year-old Alward was serving time for attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and burglary when he escaped from the Sterling Correctional Facility in northeastern Colorado Aug. 22. He surrendered three days later at a home near Yuma, where he held a woman hostage for a couple hours.

Sterling's Sugar Beet Days are coming up on September 18, and 19. The festivities are at the Logan County Courthouse. Its the 30th year for the two day event. The fun includes homemade craft items, great food vendors, rides and exceptional entertainment. On Saturday, the 18th, the festival runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday morning starts with music from Gospel Trails and the Waitleys will have a Sunday morning message.

Meeting Tonight on Sterling Escape

Colorado prison officials are holding a community meeting in Sterling to discuss the escape of an inmate from a maximum-security prison there.

Department of Corrections Director Ari Zavaras and other department executives will attend the meeting tonight on the campus of Northeastern Junior College.

Forty-eight-year-old Douglas Alward was serving time for attempted murder, assault, kidnapping and burglary when he escaped on Aug. 22. Officials haven't said how.

He surrendered three days later at a home near Yuma, where he had been holding a woman hostage. Authorities said the hostage was well but released no other details.

It was Alward's fourth escape.

He has been placed in solitary confinement at another Colorado prison.

Friends of of the Library Gest $400 from Lions Club

The Sterling Lions Club gave the Sterling Public Library a 500 dollar check on Saturday, the fruits of their labor at the Lions 90th Anniversary Pancake Breakfast. The fun was at Pioneer Park this summer. The funds will be used for the children's area of the library.

Sherman Street Closed Starting Today

The railroad crossing at Sherman Street will be closed to all traffic starting this morning so that The City of Fort Morgan Street Department and Aggregate Industries can asphalt pave the 100 block of Sherman Street. Please use alternate route while construction is in progress. The project should be complete this Saturday, September 11.

Cherry Street Improvement Project Continues

Don't forget Cherry Street in Fort Morgan will be closed between Burlington Ave. and Gateway Ave. to through traffic during an improvement project. Access will remain available for residents. The project's been going on since August 12 and runs through September 9. Work crews are on the job from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fort Morgan Council Final Vote on Marijuana Tomorrow's Meeting

Fort Morgan City Council meets tomorrow night. The public meeting starts at 7 p.m. and council will vote on that much talked about issue of prohibiting the production and sale of medical marijuana, in other words, not allowing those dispensaries that they've spent weeks talking about.

Before that, there'll be two public hearings: one on the Electric Tariff Changes Regarding Interconnection Rates. The other is on the Special Events Permit for the Elks Club.

Before that, council will start with an executive session at 5:30 p.m. to talk about a water emergency plan and to discuss court administration issues with the city attorney.

Seven people were in court on Saturday for various driving violations. As today is Labor Day, and the holiday driving period continues until tonight, keep in mind seatbelt laws, impaired driver laws and safe driving in general. Police expect to you to watch your driving. They'll be watching you.

David Walsh Cancer Center Opens This Week

On Thursday, cancer patients here will not have to drive to Denver for treatment. The Denver Post reports that the David Walsh Cancer Center on the Sterling Regional MedCenter campus will open, bringing treatment close to home. Walsh died of esophageal cancer in 1998 and his parents Frank and Gloria Walsh worked to bring treatment home for future patients. The center is 86 hundred square feet and is a nearly nine million dollar state of the art center that will have radiation oncology, chemotherapy and infusion services, a tumor registry, a physician's clinic and a patient education center. Officials in here say the center will draw companies and new residents to the area.

Greeley Police Arrested 11 Year Old for Attack

Police in Greeley have arrested an 11 year old girl for attacking a woman who tried to break up a fight between two girls that the juvenile was watching. The 47-year-old jogger was attacked by a posse of teenage girls when she tried to break up the fight in Greeley. Police say the woman was jogging August 24th in Glenmere Park when she tried to break up a brawl between as many as 20 teen girls. They turned their attention to the jogger, roughing her up while filming the incident on cell phones. Police also have a 17 year old in custody for the attack.

Weeks in Court for Status Hearing

Mark Weeks was in court this week for a status hearing. Weeks is accused of murdering his daughter Alexis McClain in July. His wife, not the child's mother, was also charged. The district attorney said yesterday that while he has volumes of evidence in the case, he has not received the grand jury transcripts. He told the district judge that the information's being processed and asked for another status hearing. Weeks' public defender agreed and the judge set the next hearing for November 2nd. Ginger Weeks will be in court for a status hearing on September 7. Both are being held without bond at the Logan County Detention Center.

Sterling Library Closed Later This Month for the Move

Sterling Public Library will be closed Sept. 16 -22, 2010 while the library staff moves
to the new addition. We encourage you to check out plenty of books to read during this time. We also encourage you to keep any books you have that are due during this time and return them on Sept. 23rd. The library will suspend fines accumulated on the closure dates. If you have access to a computer you may renew your items while the library is closed by visiting http://sterling.polarislibrary.com.

Sterling Public Library will continue to provide online services during the closure. You may use the informational databases on the Polaris site or on our web page at http://sterlingcolo.com to find all types of information. An additional service to provide you with answers to your questions is AskColorado. The service provides 24/7 information experts from Colorado libraries to chat with you and help find the information you need. AskColorado is available at www.askcolorado.org.

Another service available during our closure is Overdrive. This service provides
downloadable movies, audios and e-books. The service is free and available at http://www.coloradodc.lib.overdrive.com. To use this service and the online databases you need to have a valid, up-to-date library card. Beginning Sept. 16th Dial-a-Story will also be unavailable. This service will not be available again until construction is completed. Public service announcements on channel 19 will also be unavailable during this time.

Due to the move Story Time will start Oct. 5th and 6th. This year pre-registration will not be required. You may begin attending at anytime. We encourage you to bring your child regularly for them to receive the greatest benefit, but welcome you at anytime. Toddle Time for 18 months through 2 years old will be Wednesday from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.

Public Library will again offer an evening family Story Time for families with children
under 6 years on Tuesday from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. We hope you will join us for Story Time this year and enable your child to experience the joy of books.

Fort Morgan Man Killed By Reno Police Last Week

A Fort Morgan man is dead, shot by Reno Nevada Police. They say Stuart Wood threatened police with a gun in the parking garage of a Reno casino nearly a week ago. It was not the first time Wood had threatened police. Fort Morgan Police said previously, Wood claimed he would not go back to prison and had had run ins with police here too. Police say the weapon Wood had last week may have been stolen.

Memory Walk '10 is September 11

Memory Walk '10 is coming up on September 11 and organizers are finishing up the plans for the event that's at Fort Morgan City Park. It's the 20th year for the walk that benefits Alzheimer's research and awareness. Teams are now out raising funds for the event. This year's goal is 28 thousand dollars. Sign up at alz.org/co.

Reid Family Wins at State Fair Again

Somebody has a little extra bling for college! Lisa Reid's state fair grand champion steer netted her more than 50 thousand dollars as she heads to school this fall. The Denver Post reports that the Sam Brown family of Pueblo, longtime high bidders, outran Denver Post owner William Dean Singleton and the Denver Rustlers for Reid's $53,000 winner this year.

Xcel Energy Offers Meeters at Library

Want to learn how much energy you use? Sterling Public Library has just the help you need. Xcel Energy has supplied the library with Watts Up meters that will help you retrieve knowledge about the energy your appliances use.

Power Check is an energy efficiency education program provided by Excel Energy. Library patrons can check out a Watts Up meter to help learn about energy use and determine ways to conserve energy and save money. The Watts Up meter will help identify high energy use appliances, determine approximate cost of use for appliances, predict savings in reducing appliance use and calculate cost savings for replacing older appliances.

The meter is simple to use and helps you take an important step in saving energy. An easy to follow instruction booklet on how to use the meter is included with each kit and more help can be found online. The meter also has the ability to download data to a PC for graphing and charting. This interface also provides a pay-back calculator to calculate number of months to pay back the cost of new energy efficient appliances.

After you have checked out your energy use, please go online to the web address
provided with the meter and fill out a short survey. The information Xcel gathers
through the survey will help support the continued success of the Power Check program.
