Sterling Police Investigating Suspicious Death

Sterling police are investigating the death of a man inside an apartment on McGregor Road. Chief Roy Breivik says officers were called to teh scene around 4:30 this morning...






TAG: Chief Breveik went on to say that man was questioned by investigators, but did not go into further detail. The victim has not been identified. Anyone with information on this death should contact Sterling Police.

Body Found in Sterling Apt.

At approximately 4:35 am, Sterling police officers this morning responded to 435 McGregor Rd, Apt. 218 in regards to a dead body in the apartment. Upon arrival, officers did find the body of the deceased male inside the apartment. Officers were also able to contact another individual in the apartment.

Observation of the scene indicated apparent trauma to the victims head. After confirming the victim was deceased, officers secured the apartment. Detectives are obtaining a search warrant and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been contacted to provide investigative and forensic support.

At this time, the victim has not been identified. The individual contacted in the apartment was brought in for an interview. As this is an ongoing investigation, detectives and officers from the Sterling Police Department and investigators from the CBI will be processing the scene in and around the apartment, as well as interviewing residents.

Gardner Makes US Service Academy Appointments

Congressman Cory Gardner has nominated 32 high school students from Colorado’s 4th Congressional District for appointment to the U.S. Service Academies. Dusty Johnson of Fort Morgan High School was nominated to West Point. Jacob Gerken, also from Fort Morgan High School, Addy Neibauer of Greeley Central High School and Isaac Reinert of the Frontier Academy in Greeley were nominated to the US Air Force Academy. Applicants are put through a rigorous evaluation process that looked at academic and athletic achievements, leadership skills, character, extra-curricular activities and drive to succeed. Fourth District candidates are part of a select group of nominees from across the country. Each individual service academy will make their final appointments.

Brush City Council To Meet Monday

The Brush City Council will meet Monday evening. Before the regular meeting, the finance committee will discuss proposed disbursements. Council members will duscyss among other things, the city's airport consultant agreement as well as an incentive package for downtown businesses. The council will also discuss trash and garbage fees. Before closing the meeting, the council will hold an executive session for an annual review of city administrator Monty Torres. The regular meeting is scheduled for 7 o'clock Monday at Brush City Hall on Edison Street.

Authorities Arrest Boyfriend of Missing Fort Morgan Girl

Authorities have made an arrest in the case of a missing Fort Morgan Teen. Late Monday, a grand jury indicted of 18-year-old Ivan Torralba on charges of attempting to mislead a public servant, destroying evidence and four counts of purjury. Fort Morgan police chief Keith Kuretich says Torralba was at the center of their investigation since Kayla Chadwick disappeared March 27...

Morgan County Harvest Numbers Are Positive

The numbers are in and Morgan County producers are reporting good numbers for this Fall's beet harvest, while corn harvest numbers remain lower. According to the Fort Morgan Times, 95-percent of the corn harvest is done. The poorest harvest was from dryland corn which will likely keep corn prices high this year. The Western Sugar Cooperative reports beet yields of around 32 tons per acre, although less than half of the harvest has been done. Producers report the sugar content is over 16-percent...which is also considered good.

Fort Morgan Chamber of Commerce Choses New Officers

The Fort Morgan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has chosen new officers for next year. During their November meeting late last week, the board elected Jeff Osuch as President, Melissa Johnson as Vice President and Julie Spradlin as Secretary. Bob Farmer was also re-elected as the chamber's Treasurer. The chamber's current President, Geoff Baumgartner will remain with the chamber in 2013, serving in an advisory capacity. Baumgartner will serve on the Chamber's board of directors as Past President.

Boat Ramps Closing For The Winter

Boat ramps at 16 state parks in Colorado have started to close for the season. The boat ramps will reopen in the spring when the ice thaws. The boat ramp at North Sterling State Park is among those that have closed for the winter. For additional closures and information about hand launched vessels and ice fishing, please visit the individual park websites at http://cpw.state.co.us. Officials say all Colorado State Parks will remain open for other outdoor recreation activities throughout the winter. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages 42 state parks, more than 300 state wildlife areas, all of Colorado's wildlife, and a variety of outdoor recreation.

Colorado's LEAP Program Accepting Applications

Colorado¹s Low-income Energy Assistance Program has begun accepting applications and will continue to do so until April 30, 2013. LEAP is a federally funded program that provides cash assistance to help families and individuals pay a portion of their winter home heating costs. The program pays the highest benefits to those with the highest heating bills and lowest incomes by family size. Applicant income cannot exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty index, which equates to $2,882 per month for a family of four. To qualify for LEAP, applicants must be responsible for paying heating costs directly to an energy provider, fuel dealer or as part of their rent. Applicants must also be a permanent legal resident of the United States and Colorado or have household members that are U.S. citizens. For more information on the program, call 1-866-HEAT-HELP.

US Rep Gardner Slams President on New Unemployment Numbers

Republican Congressman Cory Gardner's office released a written statement this morning following the release of October's unemployment report. Gardner said it is clear that President Obama has not been able to deliver on his promises and that his policies have not and will not turn this economy around. Gardner went on to say that millions of Americans continue to suffer as the President continues to talk. Gardner also vowed to continue to stand against higher taxes and more regulations that hurt job growth.

Harlem Globetrotters Murder

The man who shot and killed Harlem Globetrotters Trainer Thomas Bashline last November will spend the rest of his life in prison with no possibility of parole. That was the sentence imposed upon Draton Phillip Mares in a Greeley Courtroom yesterday. Bashline and Mares met through an ad on Craigslist. The two were at Bashline's home when Mares convinced him to lie on his bed for a massage. Mares then blindfolded Bashline, put a pillow over his head, then shot him. Investigators were able to connect Mares to the crime through the use of DNA, a series of text messages, and feathers that were found at the victim’s house that were also stuck on Mares shoes.

High Ratings For Ft. Morgan Schools

The Ft Morgan School Board accepted the state's accreditaion for the district at last nights meeting. The state gave the district a "Performance" rating, the highest accredication available. Two schools, Baker Central and Fort Morgan High School, received "improvement" ratings, one level below performance. Sherman Early Childhood Center, Pioneer, Green Acres and Columbine Elementary Schools and Fort Morgan Middle School all received "performance" ratings. Lincoln High School's rating is pending school performance framework results from the state.

Log Lane Village Approves Alleway Cleanup Program

Officials in Log Lane Village have set the fees associated with an alleyway cleanup project. Local property owners had been ordered to cleanup the alleys but town officials say most have not complied. Last week, the Log Lane Village Board of Trustees approved an ordinance to charge property owners by the hour for cleanup crews. Property owners will have 48 hours to clean their property after being given notification. If the property owners do not comply, a crew will be sent out and property owners will be charged $100 per hour. Fees payable to the Morgan County Landfill will also be charged as well as a 5-percent inspection fee after the cleanup is done.

The USDA Farm Service Agency says payments under the CRP and DCP programs will be out soon...as long as all producer eligibility requirements are met. Payments could be affected if producers have not submitted the required AGI forms. Affected producers will need to submit the proper AGI forms before payments can be issued. In addition, producers who signed up for CRP emergency haying and grazing and did not pay in advance will notice that their annual rental payment was reduced by the acreage that was hayed or grazed.

Sexually Violent Predator Moves Near Sterling Elementary School

Sterling police notified residents last night about a sexually violent predator who moved into the area a week ago. Fifty three year old Michael David Simpson moved from Fort Morgan to Sterling and now lives at a home on King Court, north of Platte Street and a block west of Campbell Elementary School. Colorado law requires police to hold a community notification meeting whenever a sexually violent predator moves into the area. City hall was packed Thursday night with scores of residents who attended the meeting.

Golf Cours Advisory Board Discusses Driving Range

Fort Morgan city leaders met Thursday at the clubhouse at the city-owned Quail Dunes Golf Course. The Municipal Golf Course Advisory Board met to discuss among other things, new policies at the golf course as well as ongoing improvements to the driving range. The board is also looking for more members. Head golf pro Tyler Tarpley also updated the board on Quail Dunes' finances in addition to the course's management and maintenance. The board will meet again on November 9.

Fort Morgan Planning Commission to Meet 10/22

Fort Morgan's planning commission will meet on Monday, October 22. On the agenda for the meeting will be a presentation from community planning consultant Jessica Ibanez. She will deliver a Colorado Brick Council Educational Presentation. In recent weeks, crews have been installing brick pavers throughout parts of downtown Fort Morgan. The planning commission meeting is free and open to the public. The meeting will be held at 4:30 inside the council chambers at City Hall.

Sterling's Annual Citywide Clean up gets underway next week. its an opportunity for residential trash customers to dispose of oversided or bulky items...as well as any other household rubbish...that is legally disposable at the Logan County Landfill. Examples of items accepted by the city include: mattresses, lumber, furniture, bed frames, cabinets, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers, microwaves and water heaters. Anything containing freon is not acceptable. The city has divided residential neighborhoods into four areas, and city crews will only pick up items on the designated days for each area. All items should be available for pickup no later than 7 a.m. on the first date for that area.

The Logan County Sheriffs office says an 11-year-old girl reported being chased to school in Merino this morning. She said she was walking to school when she heard footsteps behind her. When she looked back, she saw a white male, who was about 40-50 years old and bald, with a grey beard and a medium build, that appeared to be running toward her. The male was dressed in a blue T-shirt and blue jean shorts. He didn't say or yell anything at her. Deputies checked the area after she reported the incident at the school and didn't find anyone who matched that description. A neighborhood canvas was also completed in regards to the incident. Anyone with information about the suspicious male is asked to contact authorities.

-Tips are coming in from around the country in connection with the case of 10-year old Jessica Ridgeway, who went missing last week. The Huffington Post, an on line newspaper, reports that Police in Portsmouth New Hampshire are investigating an abandoned car with Colorado plates that is linked to a reported sighting of the missing girl. On Sunday, a woman informed police that she'd seen a girl who looked like Jessica in a light blue station wagon. The car turned up abandoned behind a Walmart this morning. Meanwhile, Police in Arvada have yet to positively identify the body found yesterday evening..but the search for Jessica continues.

Logan County Commissioners Increase Tourism Information Center Budget

Logan County commissioners have approved two Lodging Tax Board projects. During Tuesday's meeting, commissioners approved a proposal to spend $2,000 to advertise a pair of Master Chorale concerts. The first is December 16, the second is in May of next year. Commissioners also approved a $25 budget increase for the Logan County Tourist Information Budget which is now set at $7,875. Other business included extension of an agreement between Logan county and Banner Health to restock medical supplies in the county's ambulances. Finally, commissioners approved another agreement between the county and Centurylink for use of the county right of way below County Road 48 for a new telephone service line. That project will be completed by the end of the month.

Greeley Man Killed In Monday Crash

A 45-year-old Greeley man died in a three-car collision Monday east of Greeley. Weld County Coroner Mark Ward said Roger Hanson died at North Colorado Medical Center. Authorities say Hanson was driving a minivan westbound on U.S. 34 at Weld County Road 87 near Dearfield when he crossed into the eastbound lanes. A pickup truck driven by 52-year-old Richard Henry was traveling eastbound and swerved to the left. The two vehicles side-swiped on the passenger sides of the vehicles, causing Hanson's van to rotate again and strike another pickup driven by 58-year-old Deborah Veltri. Henry suffered minor injuries. Veltri was transported to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley with serious injuries. All three drivers were wearing seat belts and were alone in their vehicles. There is no suspicion of alcohol or drug use. Hanson is the 33rd person to die on Weld roads this year compared to 27 last year at this time.

Logan County Campaign Sign Destruction Decried

While authorities are still trying to figure out "whodunnit," the Logan County Republican Party has issued an official reaction that condemns the destruction of a campaign sign last week. The incident occurred sometime between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursaday. It comes on the heels of other incidents involving mutilated American flags and damaged or stolen Republican campaign signs in mid-September. The Republican campaign signs that have been vandalized mainly have been those supporting Logan County Commissioner candidate Rocky Samber and Presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Logan County Republicans Chairman Conrad Bostran called for a response from local Democrats. So far there has been no official response. Authorites are still investigating the vandalism.

In Weld County District Court today, 50--year old James Kenneth Rodgers was setenced to two years in jail. He was accused of groping a blind woman and failing to register as a sex offender. Rodgers, a transient and convicted sex offender, admitted to the assault, which took place in a Greeley laundromat earlier this year. .

The Colorado Department of Agriculture's State Veterinarian's office announced Friday that it has released four quarantines associated with the recent anthrax cases in Logan County. None of the ranches involved remain under quarantine. The original case was announced on Aug. 8. More than 50 head of cattle died due to the anthrax outbreak. The quarantine was in effect for 30 days after the last confirmed death, and was lifted on Sept. 25.

43-year-old Kenneth Brenemen Jr. will serve 2 years probabation, pay nearly 17-hundred dollars in fees, and complete an outpatient alcohol treatment program..this following his conviction for a shooting at his Morgan County home. He faces serveral charges in connection with the incident, but the jury only found him guiltuy of misdemeanor prohibited use of a weapon while intoxicated. Breneman has a history of alcohol-related problems.

About three dozen people gathered under a tree in Columbine Park last night, just a few feet away from the spot were 13 year old Trae Schumaker died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Sterling Middle School students and their parents held hands and looked down at a makeshift memorial, while a deacon from St. Anthony's spoke some words of comfort. Some close friends of Schumaker stayed later into the evening and released some balloons in his memory. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Tennant Funeral Home.

Robert Bernal, one of the suspected shooters in a confrontation at the Sinclair Station near Atwood last month was formally charged in Logan County District Court yesterday. He's accused of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, aggravated robbery and five habitual criminal counts. If convicted, Bernal could be sentenced to life in prison. The court set his bond at $1.5 million following the recommendation of prosecutors who called Bernal the kingpin of the confrontation that left three people wounded and one paralyzed.

Morgan County Sheriff's Office Investigating Car Burglaries

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office is asking for help from area residents in identifying five suspects in two seperate vehicle burglaries earlier this month. Both burglaries were reported from county addresses south of Fort Morgan. The first burglary was reported around September 7. The second burglary was reported a week later. Credit cards stolen from both vehicles were used at several locations around the area. Investigators have also released surveillance footage from the Fort Morgan Wal-Mart where several credit cards were used. Authorities are looking for three men and two women. All of the suspects but one of the women is believed to be in their 20s. The group was seen driving a metallic-colored Toyota Sienna minivan. Faculty members at the University of Colorado are circulating petitions trying to get support for legislation that would allow the university to set its own weapons policy.
The University of Colorado Board of Regents approved a revised gun policy allowing people with permits to bring guns almost anywhere on the Boulder campus.
In March, the Colorado Supreme Court upheld an appeals court ruling that said CU can't ban permit holders from bringing guns to campus. Guns are, however, still banned at ticketed events, including football games at Folsom Field and concerts in Macky Auditorium.

Medical marijuana cards for people with post-traumatic stress disorder appear unlikely in Colorado, and some veterans are planning to protest the snub from state health officials. A group of veterans rallied today in Colorado Springs. They say that because PTSD won't qualify for marijuana cards, the state should adopt legalization for all on the November ballot. This is the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's second denial of a petition to add PTSD to the list of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana.

Some Ft. Morgan civic leaders are considering the formation of a Human Relations Commission. According the the US Department of Justice, the purpose of a Human Relations Commissioner is to promote ways for people to get along with each other, and to safeguard equal opportunity for all. They are especially common in cities with growing immigrant or refugee populations. For people of different backgrounds and interests to get along, it is useful for local government to set up places and programs to help people develop a better understanding of each other and to solve any differences that might arise. The Colorado Trust has offered a grant to pay for a feasibility study. By February, recommendations for the Ft. Morgan City Council are expected to be ready.

Tragedy in Columbine Park this morning. 13-year-old Trae Schumaker, a student at Sterling Middle School was discovered dead shortly after 7:30. Police say the cause of death was a gunshot work. According to investigators, an early assessment of the evidence does not indicate any threats or concerns to public safety.

IRS Offers Tax Relief to CO Ranchers Affected by the Drought

The IRS is offering reliev to livestock owners have sold their animals as a result of the drought.






Colorado Farmers and ranchers who previously were forced to sell livestock due to drought, now have an extended period of time in which to replace the livestock and defer tax on any gains from the forced sales. To qualify, the livestock generally must be replaced within a four-year period. The IRS is authorized to extend this period if the drought continues. The one-year extension of the replacement period generally applies to capital gains realized by eligible farmers and ranchers on sales of livestock held for draft, dairy or breeding purposes due to drought. Sales of other livestock, such as those raised for slaughter or held for sporting purposes, and poultry are not eligible. The body of retired San Francisco Fire Fighter Charles Dowd has been found near Haigler, Nebraska. Dowd was traveling from California to Chicago, on his way to meet his son in Montreal. The Morgan County Sheriff's Office and Ft. Morgan Police searched a 30-mile long strip of the rail bed look for Dowd. Washington and Yuma County officials also searched in their respective counties. Dowd's son last heard from him around 6:30pm on September 12th, when the train was just outside of Denver. No word yet on the cause of death.

Well, now a 75-year-old Erie man has been ticketed in connection with the incident. CSP announced today that James Ernst was cited for two counts of harrassment, impeding the flow of traffic, minimum speed violations, and improper use of a horn or warning device. Dirk Friel took the video while he and a friend were followed for about five minutes during a Sunday-morning ride.

A charter school teacher who says she was fired for pumping breast milk during school hours won a financial settlement and policy change at her old school. Heather Burgbacher taught technology at The Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen for five years before she was let go last summer. In late 2010, Burgbacher arranged for her students to do supervised desk work for the brief periods during which she needed to pump breast milk -- which amounted to 20 minutes, three times each week. The school told her they would not accommodate her pumping schedule and informed her that they would not renew her employment contract. Burgbacher contacted the American Civil Liberties Union who filed the suit on her behalf.

Gas and electric rates were lowered last November to compensate city residents for three years of over-collecting, and to pay down the utilities reserve funds. Now, councilmembers must decide if it is time to increase the rates to a normal level...which would still be lower than the rates prior to last November. The potential new rates would be based on a comprehensive rate study. If the council does approve any rate adjustment tonight, a public hearing on the subject will be scheduled for November 6th.

A father in Oswego is being hailed as a hero today. The man and his family were in their yard sunday evening when a car jumped the curb and made a bee-line toward his 11 year old son. The father pushed the boy out of the way so he was only side-swiped by the car, which then plowed into their home. The boy was taken to the hospital as a precaution. The driver suffered only minor injuries. The house did not sustain any major structural damage.

Weld County investigators say the shooting death of 11-year-old Andre Limas on Friday evening was accidental. The victims 18-year old brother, Jordan Limas, is facing charges of criminally negligent homicide. Police say young Andre saw the gun sitting on a table and picked it up. His brother told him it was not a toy and attempted to wrestle it away from him. The gun went off during the struggle striking young Andre in the chest. Investigators now say the 22-caliber hand gun, which Jordan Limas said belonged to him, was actually stolen.

Logan County Commissioners met with their Morgan County counterparts earlier this week to take a look at the pluses and minuses of installing trash balers at the Logan County landfill. The Morgan County officials say they make more efficient use of the the available space. However, they cost more to operate both in terms of maintenance and man hours. The balers also preserve the trash for use making energy at a later date when the technology to burn it cleanly is developed. Morgan County also had to increase their landfill price to $30 per ton; Logan County charges $21 per ton. The Logan Commissioners made the inquiry as they consider applying for a grant to pay for a baler. The application deadline is in Decembe.

Energy contol system maker "Woodward Incorporated" was approved for 7-point-3 million dollars in tax credits. Athletic Shoe Retailer , "The Finish Line" was approved for 875-thousand. Community Power Corp., which plans to commercialize mobile units that turn organic waste into energy, got the okay for 432-thousand dollars; and a 1-point-9 million dollar request from Surrey Satellite Technology got the go ahead as well.

The purchase of the oil field services company "Maverick Stimulation" by Basic Energy had a huge impact on Morgan County's tax revenue, according to a report made to the county commissioners at their meeting earlier this week. Morgan County collected $691,392 in August. In July, the county collected $394,000, which means the transaction netted the county nearly 300-thousand dollars. The state and local cities collected another $1.465 million.

No Missile Crash

Reports of a missile crash west of Pueblo this morning are unfounded, according to NORAD. Colorado State Patrol says a 9-1-1 caller reported what they thought was a plane going down shortly after 6:30. An official at The U.S. Army's White Sands Missile Range originally said it was a test missile, but a spokesperson later backed off that statement, saying their test missile and an interceptor they fired were both accounted for. When Colorado State Patrol pressed the investigation, White Sands told them to "stand down", suggesting that whatever had been scene in the skies was likely an optical illusion.

Secretary of State Scott Gessler announced last month that backers of the divisive "personhood" amendment fell about 39-hundred short of the 86-thousand valid signatures needed.

Banner Health is instituting a system-wide mandatory flu vaccine policy. It will require all employees, employed physicians, volunteers, vendors, contractors and health care students, including those at East Morgan County Hospital in Brush, to be vaccinated by Dec. 1. The requirement is part of Banner's "No Flu for You" program, which aims to ensure that Banner-affiliated personnel who come in contact with patients are vaccinated. Those unable to receive the vaccination because of medical or religious reasons will have the opportunity to apply for an exemption to meet the Dec. 1 deadline. Those who don't receive the vaccine will be required to wear a surgical mask wherever patients may be present during the flu season.

C-DOT Crews To Work On I-76 East of Sterling

The Colorado Department of Transportation has announced an upcoming road maintenance project for next week. C-DOT crews will be doing resurfacing and crack sealing along a 20-mile stretch of I-76 east of Sterling and west of Crook. The work will be done between mile markers 125 and 145. Lane closures and speed reduction are to be expected between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. C-DOT officials say the work will begin Monday Sept. 17 and will continue through Friday Sept. 28.

Law Enforcement officials are warning rural residents to take precautions to protect their hay. Reports of stolen hay are starting to become more frequent. Hay theft has been an issue nationwide this summer due to the drought and significant increase in the cost of hay. Recently, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office received a report from a farmer located on East County Road 76 that someone stole 5-thousand dollars worth of hahy and damaged another 8-hundred dollars worth. The hay, both round and square bales, was stolen directly from the field. Investigators recommend hay be stored out of sight and in a secure location if possible.

Hard Landing in Weld County

Two people survived what's being referred to as a "hard landing" in a Weld County Field over the weekend. An FAA Designated Pilot examiner and a man going for his private pilot license rode the plane down after it the propeller lost one of its three blades mid flight. By the time the plane came to a halt, a second propeller blade had sheared off, but otherwise the plane was intact. They were able to guide the plane into a a wheat stubble field on Weld County Road 5. No one was injured in the incident.

Closing arguments got underway today in the trial of Benjamin David Gilmore. Gilmore is accused of attempted murder, arson and criminal mischief in connection with a $10 million fire last October. A new law goes into effect tomorrow that requires large trucks to carry snow chains. C-DOT says commercial vehicles weighing more than 26,000 pounds traveling Interstate 70 over mountain passes must carry sufficient chains to keep them from getting stuck until May 31. The federal government has approved two more leases for companies to research how to economically extract oil from oil shale resources in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. The grants give farmers the opportunity to nominate a public school district in their community to compete for a merit-based grant of either $10,000 or $25,000 to enhance education in the areas of math and/or science. More than 1,000 nominated school districts submitted applications. RE-1 will receive a $25,000 grant to help with construction of greenhouses at a couple of local high schools.
Fleming will get a $10,000 grant to create an integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Agricultural Research Center.

According to the City Manager, the funds were set aside in the mid 1970's when Sterling maintained its own pension fund for Police Officers. Currently, only one beneficiary receives payments. If the council wants to dispense the funds, they'll have to publish a notice to give the beneficiary and the public ample time to respond.

The American Civil Liberties Union says it is being contacted by U.S citizens who received letters from Colorado Secretary of State Scott Gessler questioning their right to vote. The organization's Colorado branch says the voters are among the nearly 4,000 people who Gessler sent letters to asking them to voluntarily withdraw their registration or prove their citizenship. Gessler's office says only those who voluntarily withdraw are having their registration canceled.

Their message was, "Show me the money" They're alledging that GivingFirst.org did not disburse funds to the victims' families, but instead sent the money to local nonprofits.. The Colorado Organization for Victim Assistance reportedly asked the victims' committee to delay the press conference so they could speak directly to them. The families hope there will be an audit trail and complete transparency in the donations to make sure the victims and families get the funds.

Two Sterling medical practices are among the 73 in Colorado selected to participate in a program aimed at keeping health care costs down.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has named Sterling Primary Care and Northeast Colorado Family Medicine Associates to the list of participants in the partnership between CMS and other payers. Under the Initiative, CMS will pay primary care practices a care management fee to support enhanced, coordinated services on behalf of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. For patients, this means their Doctors may offer longer and more flexible hours, use electronic health records; coordinate care with patients' other health care providers; better engage patients and caregivers in managing their own care, and provide individualized, enhanced care for patients living with multiple chronic diseases and higher needs.

Wiggins is withholding about 14-thousand dollars from the payment to the contractor who put in some new sidewalks recently. The money is being withheld pending the resolution of a dispute over extra asphalt that was laid as the sidewalks were going in. The work was not part of the original contract, but the contractor says is was necessary. The contractor is expected to meet with Wiggins town leaders to discuss the issue.

Congressmen Cory Gardner and Scott Tipton have asked U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to extend the Conservation Reserve Program acres for haying and livestock grazing through November. In a letter written by the congressmen to Secretary Vilsack, they said an extension would carry Colorado cattlemen through the corn harvest. The letter adds Until corn, corn stalks and wheat grass are available for feed, cattle need to be able to graze on Reserve Program land. The letter goes on to say if this does not occur, many ranchers who have been able to withstand the drought thus far will be forced to sell their livestock in the final days before fall and winter feeds are available.

The man Sterling Police suspect controlled a Marijuana Growing Operation had his bond set at 20-thousand dollars during an appearance in Logan County District Court earlier this week. Johnny Vatole turned himself in to police following a raid at the home he shares with his mother. Vatole has a medical marijuana license for 15 - 20 plants, but investigators found 275 plants growing in his back yard, and 72 pounds of marijuana inside the home.
