Climbers Make Trek For Chilly, Fireworks-Filled New Year's Eve

Members of the AdAmAn Club plan to start the New Year with a bang in a chilly spot. Each year someone invited to join the prestigious group joins the rest of the club on a cold trek to the summit of Pikes Peak, the state's driest 14-thousand-foot peak, on New Year's Eve. The club hikes eight miles from Manitou Springs to Barr Camp on December 30th, then moves up the eastern cirque, getting to the summit the next day, sometimes pushing through thigh-deep snow. The group will set off fireworks at 9 tonight, then the big fireworks at midnight.

Man Busted After Standoff

Members of the local law enforcement Special Response Team took a Fort Morgan
man into custody after several hours of surrounding his house on Ash Street and trying to negotiate with him yesterday. Police arrested 43 year old Brian Hastings on a warrant that included three felony charges. Fort Morgan Police Chief Keith Kuretich said Hastings' bond will be determined when he goes to court on Monday. Police were there initially to serve a warrant resulting from an incident a couple of weeks ago, but Hastings would not come out on his own, so the SRT was called in. After a time, pepper spray was thrown, allowing SRT members to go in and arrest Hastings. He was originally charged with sexual assault, false imprisonment, violating bail conditions, and misdemeanor assault. Now, law enforcement says he'll face added charges in connection with Thursday's incident.
