Hundreds Attend Brownlee Funeral

Monday to mourn the Weld County deputy killed during a shootout last week. Sam Brownlee was killed last Tuesday when an accused car thief wrestled his service weapon away from him and shot him three times. Christ Community Church Pastor Alan Kraft says he understands why people would be mad at God for Brownlee's death.
Kraft also says death is an unwelcome intruder which brings pain and suffering but that God feels the same way at death as humans do. He adds people need to trust God's plan, despite the problems life might have. The man who shot Brownlee, 20-year-old Ruben Reyes, was also killed during the shootout.

Man Died This Month in Crash

A Hillrose man died about two weeks ago after a collision early this month. Colorado Highway Patrol reported yesterday that the crash that killed 75 year old Jack D. Albert happened on November 3 about a mile east of Brush on Highway 34. Albert was driving a pick up and turned left in front of a car that
43 year old Kandis Compton of Woodrow was driving. She was seriously hurt in the crash.

Colorado Springs Artist To Paint President Obama's Portrait

A 63-year-old Colorado Springs artist will have the honor of painting a portrait of President Obama for Colorado's Capitol. Sarah Boardman competed against 83 other painters in January to obtain the portrait commission, though a state committee took nine months to get private donations for her ten-thousand-dollar fee. Boardman started the work earlier this month and the portrait will likely be completed by April. The state Capitol features portraits of all 43 U.S. presidents and Boardman told the "Gazette" she is excited to paint the 44th.

Off-Duty State Trooper Saves Boy From Icy Pond

A ten-year-old boy and an off-duty Colorado State Trooper are alive and well this morning after the two survived a harrowing ordeal in an icy pond in Greeley. The State Patrol said Brenndan Daviet and trooper Dan Haley were treated for hypothermia and then released after Haley saved the boy before almost needing to be rescued himself on Saturday. Daviet was at the Greeley FunPlex with his family when he accidentally fell into a pond there. Haley crawled over the ice and pulled Daviet out before falling through the ice himself. Haley eventually broke a path through the ice and lifted himself out to safety.

Sterling's "Windo Opening" is tonight, downtown. The tradition continues this year with the lighted courthouse, shopping, "Cocoa with Santa" -- that'll be at the First Methodist Church on South Fourth Street, meeting with friends and just enjoying the kick off to the holiday season.

Eating at Union Depot

Pueblo's historic Union Depot was the site of yesterday's annual Thanksgiving Day dinner sponsored by the Wayside Cross Rescue Mission. Each year the dinner feeds hundreds of needy folks. About 800 people were fed at yesterday's feast. Fifty turkeys and 300 pounds of potatoes were eaten.

2K Show Up to Run in Turkey Trot 5K

Over two-thousand people braved yesterday's cold temperatures to participate in the Turkey Trot 5K. The annual run is sponsored by the Briargate YMCA. With temperatures mired in the teens, runners were thankful for the sunny skies that bloomed for the Thanksgiving Day meal at the finish line of the three-point-one-mile race. Twenty-eight-year-old Adam Rich of Colorado Springs was first in a time of 14 minutes, 25 seconds.

It's Black Friday and there are lots of deals to be had, but for the really good deals you had to arrive early. This is the day retailers hope to get out of the red and into the black. Some stores in Denver began Black Friday sales as early as 10 p.m. last night. Kohl's announced it'll open at 3 a.m. this morning while JCPenny, Macy's, Target and Sears will be open at 4 a.m. The National Retail Federation estimates 138-million consumers will shop either in person or online during this holiday weekend, an increase of nearly four-million over last year.

Brownlee Funeral Monday

The Weld County Sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty this week will be laid to rest Monday. Forty-three-year-old Sam Brownlee died Tuesday of gunshot wounds he suffered after a high-speed chase of 20-year-old Rueben Reyes. Reyes grabbed Brownlee's pistol and shot the deputy three times before he himself was shot by a police officer. Brownlee's service will be held at the Hancock Sports Pavilion on the Greeley campus of Northern Colorado. A procession is scheduled afterward from campus to Linn Grove Cemetery in Greeley.

A Weld County Sheriff's deputy and now the robbery suspect are dead after that chase and shootout in Evans yesterday. Forty-three-year-old deputy Sam Brownlee was pronounced dead on arrival at North Colorado Medical Center while 20-year-old suspect Ruben Reyes also died there about six hours after a gunfight with authorities. It started when Wiggins police got a call of domestic violence after Reyes allegedly stole his girlfriend's car from East Burlington Street in Fort Morgan. Authorities from multiple jurisdictions chased the suspect for about 35 miles at speeds reportedly exceeding 100-miles an hour. Brownlee was among the officers who caught up with Reyes around 11 a.m. in the Cave Creek subdivision of Evans where both men were shot during a gunfight.

Governor-Elect Announces Newest Administration Team Member

Colorado Governor-Elect John Hickenlooper on Tuesday said state Representative Christine Scanlan will join his administration team. Scanlan, a Dillon Democrat, is a centrist who insiders say is willing to work with Republicans and not give in to partisan pressure. Scanlan will be the Director of Legislative Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, serving as a conduit between Hickenlooper and state legislators. The governor-elect has not invited anyone from El Paso County to join his team.

Two Suspicious Passengers Taken From Flight to DIA

Two people were removed from a flight to Denver International Airport yesterday where they were later searched and released. Federal authorities said two men aboard U.S. Airways flight 1525 were taken off the plane after crew members raised a concern 45 minutes before the flight's scheduled landing. Once on the ground, agents from the Transportation Safety Administration helped escort the passengers off the plane before releasing them. The flight from Charlotte originated in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Weld Co Deputy Killed

A Weld County deputy is dead, killed as he exchanged gunfire with a suspect on Tuesday morning. Police said the incident started in Fort Morgan when a woman reported her car stolen and police put out word. KUSA-TV reports that A short time later, Wiggins Police spotted the vehicle at Interstate 76 and Highway 34 where a high-speed chase ensued. The chase ended in Evans when the deputy chased the suspect on foot and was shot. He returned fire, hitting the suspect. The coroner pronounced the deputy dead and the suspect was in surgery Tuesday afternoon. No names have been released in the case.

Two Annual Community Meals

There are two community meals planned for Morgan County. The meal in Fort Mogan is expected to feed some 600 people. That meal is at Fort Morgan Middle School and is the city's ninth annual community dinner. Its from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is coordinated by St Charles the Martyr Episcopal Church. The Thanksgiving meal in Brush is by the Odle family from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Carroll Building. Its the third year for the meal that welcomes anyone who can't afford a meal, can't be with family or just doesn't want to cook!

Pueblo Iis Colorado's Most Dangerous City

Pueblo is the most dangerous city in Colorado. According to a new FBI report Pueblo beat out Denver, but didn't make a list of the top 100 most dangerous. The city ranked 112th while Denver landed on the 141st spot. Aurora, Colorado Springs and Lakewood all made the top 200 list. The FBI compiled the data based on levels of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft. St. Louis, Missouri tops the list as the most dangerous city, followed by Camden, New Jersey.

Gov-Elect's Cousin's Death Ruled Accidential

The death of the cousin of Colorado Governor-elect John Hickenlooper has been ruled an accidental overdose. The Denver Medical Examiner said George Hickenlooper died October 30th from a deadly mix of alcohol and prescription painkillers. The 47-year-old had a "moderately enlarged" heart and the examiner said Hickenlooper's history of sleep apnea were contributing factors in his death.

Case Closed on Twins' Shootings

Arapahoe County law enforcement has closed its investigation into an attempted suicide last week at a shooting range in Cherry Creek State Park. The County Sheriff's Office says it has concluded its investigation into the shootings involving 29-year-old twin sisters Candice and Kristin Hermeler of Australia. The surviving twin, Candice, told investigators the twins entered a suicide pact November 15th. Kristin Hermeler died instantly of a self-inflicted gunshot. Candice Hermeler is still in serious condition at Swedish Medical Center and authorities say she won't face charges.

City Offices Closed Thursday and Friday for Holiday

All City offices will be closed Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 for the Holiday. The City of Fort Morgan offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday, Thursday and Friday, November 25 and 26

FMPD Investigating Break-in, Property Damage

Fort Morgan police are investigating a vehicle theft and property damage incident. They said it happened on November 16th. Police said when they talked to the owner of the Chevy S-10 truck that it had been parked in the garage in the 600 block of Lincoln Street overnight. The next day, police said the owner discovered that someone broke into the garage and damaged the lock and the steering column on the truck. No Comments on NECALF 2011 Budget

The Northeastern Colorado Association of Local Governments expected to hear from the public about its 2011 budget, but nobody had anything to say. There are several increases expected in that budget, like salaries, benefits, fuel costs, labor and maintenance costs and the cost of liability insurance. There's also an increase expected in revenue, from just over 9.2 million dollars to just over 9.4 million. Since no one from the public commented on the budget, it was readied for adoption at the December meeting.

Wiggins Budget Looking Good

Wiggins town council is looking at a doable budget. The town clerk said there should be about 388 thousand dollars in revenue in the general fund. 198 thousand comes from property taxes and 80 thousand comes from sales taxes. Council mulled over the 2011 budget at a special meeting last week, and the town expects about 67 hundred dollars less in revenue for next year than this year.

Nelson Pleads Guilty to Stealing From Newspaper

Former Fort Morgan Times business manager Tamara Nelson will be sentenced on January 25 after pleading guilty to theft and forgery after she allegedly embezzled funds from the business. Other charges were dismissed with the plea. Nelson was accused of stealing from the newspaper for two years, to the tune of 54 thousand dollars. Along with whatever sentence she'll serve, Nelson was ordered last week to pay more than 54 thousand dollars in restitution. The judge said that while Nelson was eligible for probation, she could spend two to six years in prison and multiple sentences would be served concurrently, or at the same time. Nelson is free on bond.

Millions of Americans will be flying home for the traditional Thanksgiving turkey fest this week, confronting the new security rules at many airports. The Transportation Security Administration has come under intense criticism for new pat-down rules, which many find intrusive and inappropriate.

Twin Who Died in Suicide Pact Wrote to Columbine Shooting Survivor

An Australian woman who died of a self-inflicted gun shot in a suicide pact with her twin sister last week in Colorado wrote letters to a survivor of the Columbine massacre. The "Denver Post" has reported 29-year-old Kristin Hermeler wrote letters to Columbine High School student Brooks Brown several times following the April 1999 shooting. In one letter, Hermeler thanks Brown -- who was targeted by shooter Eric Harris -- for befriending Harris before the shootings took place. Hermeler's sister Candace survived her suicide attempt last Monday at Cherry Creek state park.

Residents Rally Against Violence in Pueblo

Residents held a rally against violence last night in Pueblo after a teen was attacked two weeks ago. Participants were asked to sign agreements pledging never to put up with any type of discrimination. LaNeeca Williams told KRDO-TV her son was attacked two weeks ago due to his race. High school student Brandon Castro, at the rally, said it is hard being young and expressing one's opinions, but youths need to speak out.

Bevier Cattle Backgrounder Indicted

The owner of Fink Farms was indicted today on several charges with respect to his cattle operations in Bevier. Fink Farms is a backgrounding farm, which means Fink gets cattle from its customers, feeds them and gets them ready for feedlot operations. Fink gets paid on how much weight the cattle gain while they're on his farm. The indictment says that when two cattlemen from Iowa sent Fink some 1800 head of cattle for backgrounding, some of their cattle died in Fink's care when Fink continually reassured them that the cattle were gaining weight and they continued to pay him. Between these cattle and a third cattleman's accusations, the indictment says Fink defrauded them out of more than half a million dollars. If he's convicted, Fink could get 20 years in prison and a quarter million dollar fine.

More Cuts Needed in Morgan County Budget

Can you get blood from a stone? If Morgan County is the stone and the budget cuts are the blood, you'd better! County departments have already cut more than 650 thousand dollars from their budgets for next year, ans still, they're being asked to cut more. County Finance Director Michelle Covelli said this week that with everything down, interest rates, revenues and more, its going to be tough to balance the 2011 county budget. Commissioners say they won't approve the budget until more cuts are made, but the budget has to be approved by December 15.

Colorado Guide, Clients Fined for Illegal Hunting

A Longtime Colorado hunting guide and three out-of-state clients have been fined nearly $40,000 after pleading guilty to illegally hunting deer on the state's eastern plains.

The Colorado Division of Wildlife says 56-year-old outfitter Thomas Tietz of Parker has been fined $13,750 and faces the lifetime loss of hunting and fishing privileges in Colorado and several other states. Authorities say his clients illegally transferred their licenses to each other and one person hunted outside the permitted area.

Authorities say 56-year-old Thomas Franks of Harrisburg, Ill., and 35-year-old Amy Word of Newburgh, Ind., were each fined $11,968. Fifty-seven-year-old Blaise Pignotti of St. Louis, Mo., was fined $1,968.

Colorado Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense on Thursday said that a 26-year-old soldier from Colorado Springs was killed in Afghanistan. Officials say Specialist Justin E. Culbreth died from injuries after insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device on Wednesday in the Panjway district. Culbreth enlisted in the Army in 2004, then in 2009 was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Left behind are his wife, Kimberly Culbreth; son, Brandon; step-daughters Katelyn and Hannah Carbaugh, Mariah J. Bailey and stepson, Cole R. Carbaugh.

Sheriff: Twins Had Suicide Pact

Twin sisters found shot in an Arapahoe County shooting range this week had agreed to a suicide pact sometime before they pulled the triggers of the guns that left one dead and another critically injured. After finally being able to interview the surviving twin for the first time yesterday, Arapahoe County Sheriff's officials confirmed the identical 29-year-old Australian sisters planned to commit suicide at the same time at the Cherry Creek State Park Family Shooting Range Monday afternoon. One sister's attempt to kill herself was successful while the other's gunshot left her in critical condition. Authorities say they won't be handing out charges because the women -- who were living in the U.S. on a cultural exchange visa -- had turned their own weapons on themselves.

Springs has Best Teeth

Colorado Springs residents have reason to smile. A new survey that "Men's Health" magazine conducted showed Colorado Springs has the best teeth in the nation. The magazine looked at a variety of factors, including community water fluoridation, the percentage of people who saw a dentist in the past year as well as the number of dentist offices per capita. In second place for the best teeth was Anchorage, Alaska, while the magazine deemed St. Louis had the nation's worst teeth.

"we're Just Trying to Get Rid of All Pot"

Police said Thursday that three Fort Carson soldiers claim they were attempting to dispose of marijuana when they allegedly broke into a pot dispensary. An arrest affidavit says Private First Class Ramone Hollins told police officers, after their arrest inside Rocky Road Remedies, quote, "We were just trying to get rid of all the marijuana." Officials say 22-year-old Hollins, 23-year-old Private First Class Darius Thomas and 22-year-old Private Cory Young were arrested after they allegedly locked themselves in the dispensary by mistake early Saturday. The three, who were in the 1st Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, face second-degree burglary charges.

CU Panel Recommends Closing Journalism School

A University of Colorado-Boulder panel has recommended that the university close its traditional journalism school while continuing to offer journalism education.

The report released Wednesday is part of the effort to develop a new interdisciplinary program that reflects the changes in the media industry. The panel suggested eliminating the journalism school administration and relocating tenured faculty to different departments.

The Program Discontinuance Committee recommended shutting down the CU School of Journalism and Mass Communication while maintaining journalism education, The Daily Camera reported.

A second committee considering a new program for information and communication technology will present its findings by Dec. 31.

The journalism school's structure and small size have impeded "timely and innovative resolution" of the tension between fulfilling the requirements of a research university and providing professionally oriented degree programs, according to the new report.

Panel members said after hearing from a number of people that they believe journalism education has a place with other liberal arts disciplines, but they're not sure the journalism school's current structure is the best vehicle.

The panel also said it's not convinced that technical production skills of particular media should be a major part of journalism education considering the substantial changes in technology over the last decade.

University officials and the regents must approve any changes.

Paul Voakes, the journalism school's dean, is stepping down from his post next summer and returning to teaching.

FMPD Watches Gang Members

One of the things a community meeting with Fort Morgan Police at Morgan Community College brought to light was the issue of gangs in Fort Morgan. FMPD has a team that monitors gang activity and members of that team say they make contact with gang members and keeps records on them so they can keep the peace. Since its not illegal to be a gang member, police keep an eye on the gang members. Police say they don't act until members are linked to a crime.

Early Childhood Council Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick is sponsoring a workshop, "Thinking Differently About Discipline."
The class will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Council Office at 100 Broadway Suite 14, in the Broadway Plaza Shopping Center.
This workshop is open to anyone including early care and education providers, early elementary teachers, parents, grandparents, foster families and more.
This is a free workshop, but a donation of three cans of food for the Cooperating Ministry is suggested.
In this fun, nonjudgmental, and experiential workshop, we'll explore how to set limits with mutual respect, respond proactively to lessen discipline challenges, and teach children important cognitive skill by involving them in the problem solving process. This class is worth 1.5 hours of continuing education credit.

Museum asks for military artifact donations

The Brush Area Museum and Cultural Center is asking for military memorabilia donations.

The museum is asking local people to lend the items for a new military exhibit, which is slated to open in March in the south gallery.

Specifically, the museum is looking for a military uniform from World War One and an old-style women's military uniform from before the Vietnam War.

A museum volunteer says World War One uniforms are very scarce.

While the museum is particularly interested in displaying items from people who live in Brush, it will accept donations from people in Fort Morgan and throughout the entire country.

Inside Job at Sterling Business Nets Alleged Thief 67 Counts

A Sterling man is facing more than 65 charges after he allegedly stole from his employer.

Sterling Police said that Curt Batt forged 340 thousand dollars worth of checks from Dinsdale Brothers Inc. They said that several of the checks had Christopher Dinsdale's signature on them -- he is the company president. Police said the scheme went back as 2001. They said Batt faces 32 counts of Identity Theft, 32 counts of Forgery, one count of Theft, one count of Computer Crime and one county of Criminal Attempt to Commit Theft. Batt was arrested on November 9.

CU Unveils Community College Transfer Program

The University of Colorado today is expected to unveil a new program aimed at getting more community college students to transfer to the university. CU officials bill the program as "an innovative transfer that is one of its kind in the United States." Although university officials aren't releasing many details, the program is said to expand educational opportunities for thousands of students in Colorado.

Alward makes initial court appearance

A man who escaped from the Sterling Correctional Facility made his first court appearance.

48-year-old Douglas Alward was led into the courtroom wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackles.

A device was duct taped to his leg that would shock him if he tried to escape.

Alward waived the formal reading of charges, which include escape, second-degree kidnapping and holding a hostage.

Alward escaped the Sterling Correctional Facility on August 22nd and was recaptured three days later while holding a woman hostage inside her home.

FM Budget Read Tonight

Fort Morgan City Council considers the 2011 budget tonight. It'll be the first reading of the budget that's due for final approval in early December. The budget will set the mill levy which is part of property taxes and those taxes help to fund the city's spending. The mill levy is not expected to change, but stays at 13.254 per 100 dollars of assessed valuation. Its been at that rate for 20 years. The meeting tonight starts at 7.

Commission Gives Exemption to Rule 804

The Oil and Gas Commission has granted Logan County an exemption to Rule 804. County Commissioner Debbie Zwim said that the Northeast Colorado Oil and Gas Association asked the commissioners to get them the exemption to the rule that requires oil producing facilities be painted with the same uniform color by September of this year. That would cost the company as much as ten thousand dollars per tank, so the savings, allowing the company to continue giving 80 thousand dollars in scholarships to local students.

SmartCo Stores Close Five Months After Opening

About 500 employees of a brand new supermarket in Colorado will be out of jobs by Christmas time. That's because the parent company of SmartCo Foods said yesterday it would close its five locations in Colorado just five months after opening the first one here. The SmartCo stores are a combination of grocery and warehouse store but they don't require a membership. Parent company Smart and Final operates almost 300 locations nationwide but slow sales at the Colorado stores made continuing impossible.

Sexual Assault Trial Involving Greeley Man Is Postponed

The public defender representing Robert Montoya in his sexual assault trial in Greeley has requested a postponement. The request for additional time to review new information was granted yesterday for the trial originally scheduled to begin Monday. The 18-year-old Montoya is accused of having a relationship with Kayleah Wilson, a 12-year-old who was found dead in a drainage ditch two months after she disappeared. Montoya has not been charged in Wilson's death. His trial has been rescheduled for March 21.

Fort Morgan BOE Meets Tonight

The Fort Morgan Board of Education could decide tonight to make the parking lot on the east side of the high school smaller. Officials say things like erosion and drainage issues around the building could be the culprits for the smaller space. They've been talking about cutting the number of spaces and scaling back from three phases to two while still dealing with the drainage issues. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. at the school support center at West Street and West Platte Avenue.

Time to start working on that Thanksgiving Day feast and while many people call toll free phone numbers to get tips on cooking the turkey, the North Central Health Department offers the safest tip of all: make sure the bird is at a safe temperature. To that end, starting today, NCHD will give out meat thermometers.

Caliche Pair Attends National FFA COnvention

Two Caliche High School students, Abi McWhorter and Cole Wise, recently headed to Indianapolis for the 83rd National FFA Convention. The pair spent about a week learning leadership skills, meeting other fellow learning leaders and receiving leadership awards. The convention was held in mid-October all over the city that's the home of the NFL Colts and the Indy 500.

One Dead, Four Hurt in Pueblo Crash

One person died and four people were injured in an accident on Interstate 25, slightly south of Pueblo Sunday morning. Authorities say a minivan was going north when it veered into the center median shortly before 11:30 a.m. around mile marker 88, six miles south of Pueblo. Officials say the minivan's driver lost control and overturned the vehicle and a little girl was ejected from the minivan as it flipped over. A woman who was a passenger in the vehicle was declared dead at the site, while the little girl and three other people were transported to Parkview Hospital.

Chopper Crashes at Broomfield H S on Saturday

The FAA and NTSB will be investigating a helicopter crash in Broomfiled on Saturday. Police said the crash happened at Broomfield High School around 4 p.m. After the craft touched down, the men walked away and declined medical treatment. Authorities weren't sure why the helicopter came down.

Sonnenberg Heads State Ag Committee

Sterling will have a strong voice on the House Agriculture, Livestock and Natural Resources committee, as State Representative Jerry Sonnenberg of Sterling was named chair of that committee. The committee will handle all sorts of legislation, including the environment, animal issues, water and energy. Sonnenberg is a farmer and Speaker Designee Frank McNulty said he picked the right person to head that committee.

Ginger Weeks In Court fo Status Hearing

First Mark Weeks was in court for a status hearing, and he'll be back in court in January. Now, Ginger Weeks has made a court appearance for a status hearing. Attorneys for both the prosecution and defense and the judge have agreed that her trial date can be moved. Ginger Weeks was Alexis McClain's stepmother and along with Mark Weeks, Ginger Weeks is accused in the three year old's death in July. Alexis was taken to the hospital on July 8 and died of injuries that officials say were conducive to abuse on July 9. The judge in the case wants both Weeks' cases joined.

MCAS Needs Continuous Funding

Officials with the Morgan County Ambulance Service said this week that the service can only make it one more year unless it gets some serious funding. MCAS director Bob Walter told County Commissioners that even though cuts have been made, the service hemorrhaging thousands of dollars a month. He said at one time, the ambulance made it with volunteers, but now has to have full time, paid employees to provide the best care for patients. Walters said the service is too big to run without the appropriate funding.possible,

Colorado, Other States Worry About E-coli Tainted Cheese

Colorado and several other states are concerned about E-coli tained cheese that came from Oregon. Costco warehouses have found Mauri Gorgonzola cheese contaminated with E-coli as part of a road show in those areas. Another cheese in the show was linked to another E-coli outbreak that hospitalized 15 people. The bad cheese has sell-by dates of January 13th and 14th.

Food Stamps Delayed

Several Colorado counties are struggling to keep up with incoming claims for food stamps, resulting in delays for hundreds and maybe thousands of recipients.

Denver's KUSA-TV reports that Weld and Larimer counties and others in the Denver area are late in distributing food stamps because of backlogs. Some people are waiting days and sometimes weeks.

Government officials say the slumping economy has driven up the demand for aid and there continue to be problems with the statewide computer system that processes applications.

Community food banks are trying to pick up the slack. The Weld Food Bank is encouraging people waiting for food stamps to shop with them.

Snow Shows Up

It snowed in Morgan County yesterday, but you knew that! Yes, winter showed up in Wiggins and Fort Morgan and today the National Weather Service says there's a 40 percent of snow and that will continue tonight.

Sterling Veterans Day Event

A Veterans Day program will be held at 11 a.m today at Columbine Park. A ham and bean lunch will follow at the VFW Hall on Phelps Street.

Weeks Trial Delayed Again

Mark Weeks' trial on charges that he killed his daughter Alexis has been moved again. At a status hearing this week, the judge in the case granted the defense another delay to get evidence in the case. Prosecutors agreed and the judge set the next evidence hearing for February 25. Three year old Alexis McClain died on July 9 after suffering head trauma the day before. Weeks is her biological father and he and stepmother Ginger Weeks have been charged in the child's death.

Veterans Day Events

There are several events planned for this Veteran's Day. Fort Morgan Veterans of Foreign Wars will march through the Walmart in Fort Morgan with a flag honor guard at 11 a.m. World War II veteran and Brush resident Walter Graham will talk to students at Brush Middle School as the school hosts a Veterans Day Ceremony this morning. The school choir and band will also perform.

Veteran's Day Closings

Government offices and some businesses in Morgan County will be closed today for Veterans Day. Federal, state, Morgan County and Fort Morgan and Brush city offices will all be closed. Banks are closed. There is no mail delivery and the post office is closed.

12 Hurt in Crash -- AP

Colorado authorities say a bus carrying middle school basketball players slid off an icy road and rolled, injuring 12 people onboard. An adult male was flown by helicopter to an area hospital following the Tuesday night crash, which came amid snowy weather as the bus returned from a game in Colorado Springs. The Colorado State Patrol says in a statement that the bus driver lost control at about 9:30 p.m. and spun counterclockwise after attempting to slow for another vehicle. The patrol says the bus went off the highway and down an embankment before rolling onto its right side. The patrol says 24 students and five adults were onboard, and ambulances took 11 of the passengers to area hospitals with mild to moderate injuries.

Logan County Commissioners Hear Opposition to Bookmobile Cuts

They started out showing their opposition to the budget cut at Monday's Logan County Commissioner's work session, and continued it at the budget hearing Monday night. Commissioners say the Bookmobile's budget will be cut in half this coming fiscal year, from about 32 thousand to about 16 thousand dollars. Those who oppose the cuts said smaller communities would be left out of the services the bookmobile provides. Commissioners said the money cut from the bookmobile could better serve the county in other departments.

Woman Allegedly Assaulted, Robbed Near Fulton Park

A Fort Morgan Woman told police that she was assaulted and had her wallet stolen on November 3rd. The victim said she was in the 300 block of Aurora Street near Fulton Park when three people approached her. She told police that she couldn't describe the suspects, but thinks they were wearing dark clothing. She said they pushed her down and assaulted her and took her wallet. She said the three did not say anything and she could not tell police their age or gender. Anyone who knows anything about the incident is asked to call Fort Morgan Police or Crimestoppers where you could earn a cash reward.

Winter Weather Preps Underway Up Here

Preps for winter start this week in Logan, Weld and other Northeast Colorado Counties. The Colorado Department of Transportation, or CDOT as we know it, has more than 40 employees who will plow and de-ice when it snows in Sterling, Crook and several other towns. With the challenging weather expected, crews will work 12 hours a day and will give their attention to the main roads like Interstate 76 and US 6 first, then move to secondary roads. For your part CDOT suggest that you carry windshield wiper fluid, give the snow plows room to work, go slow in ice and snow, make sure your tire have good tread and have the other items you'll need, like scraper, snow brush, coat, hat, gloves, blanket, first aid kit, flashlight, tire chains, matches and nonperishable food in your car. Caliche Band Bowls its Way to $1000

The Caliche Band has one thousand dollars toward its new uniforms and accessories. Last Friday, nearly 40 students went bowling at Ice Lanes in Iliff and Caliche's band and music director Janelle Lambrechet said it was a big success and that she's grateful to everybody who helped with the event and donated to the cause. Bennet in the Area to Say "Thank You"

Senator Michael Bennet will be in Northeastern Colorado to thank voters for sending him to Washington DC. Bennet will be on his "Thank You" tour in several cities, including Fort Morgan, Greeley, Pueblo, Boulder, Denver and others, meeting voters and saying thanks. You'll recall the race was tight, even the day after the election with Ken Buck and Bennet in a neck and neck race for the Senate seat.

Sterling Woman Hurt in Crash Near Ft Morgan

A Sterling woman was hurt Sunday night when her car hit a deer on Interstate 76. Colorado State Patrol said Michele Wingert was treated and released from Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan. Two children in her car were not hurt. CSP said Wingert suffered back pain, cuts and scrapes. Troopers said she was heading east on the interstate just east of Brush when her car hit the deer and spun. Her car had moderate damage.

Woman Slightly Hurt in Driving While Sleepy Crash

Just as Triple A reported that 40 of drivers they surveyed admitted to falling asleep at the wheel, Colorado State Patrol said a Fort Lupton woman was hurt slightly early on Monday when she apparently fell asleep while driving. CSP said Courtney Ostrander was involved in a rollover near Fort Morgan, taken to Colorado Plains Medical Center, treated and released. Her car was totaled in the 3:30 a.m. crash.

Logan County Budget Starts in the Negative

Logan County's budget starts out half a million dollars short, and as its discussed tonight, county commissioners will have to decide what to cut. One of the things they're looking at is the Northeast Colorado Bookmobile Services. Commissioners also say they'll cut into the Road and Bridge budget by about a million dollars. Commissioners said they knew they county would be starting out with the half a million dollar shortage, but still needed to make the cuts. Tonight's meeting will give the public a chance to have their say about what the budget should look like.

MCSD Looking for Trailer Thieves

The Morgan County Sheriff`s Office is looking suspects in the theft of two horse trailers from Great West Trailer and Truck, west of Fort Morgan along Interstate 76. The trailers are worth 130 thousand dollars.
Sheriff's officials said that on September 3, at least two people broke into the company's lot. They hooked a 2009 Bloomer 30 food horse trailer to their Ford truck and headed toward Wiggins on I-76. The trailer is black, white and gold and has living quarters in it. A few hours later, that same day, they came back and took a 2007 Merhow Equistar two-horse slant trailer. This one was white, and they again headed toward Wiggins.

Med Pot Gets No Vote

Medical marijuana issues did not fare well in last week's election, with voters in cities and towns statewide baning dispensaries and growing operations. Retail operations were banned by voters in Akron, Broomfield, Hillrose, Otis and numerous other cites. In 2000, voters approved an amendment to the state Constitution allowing the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

Colorado Meth Project In Morgan County

Meth is a rural drug. That's what those with the Colorado Meth Project say and why they're working to curb the problem in Morgan County. Members of the group were in Brush recently and said lots of people in Morgan County have admitted to using the drug and rehabilitating from it. Officials say meth use in Morgan County is more than triple that of use in all of Colorado. Colorado Meth Project wants to bring a week long program to the county to help curb use of the drug.

Fort Morgan City offices will be closed on Thursday in observance of Veterans Day, November 11.

Weeks in Court

Mark Weeks will be back in a Logan County Courtroom on January 5 of next year. Weeks is accused of killing his daughter Alexis in July. Attorneys for the defendant said they needed more time to collect and process evidence. The judge also remind both the defense and prosecution to have all their information up to date at that time. Weeks was charged with child abuse-knowing/reckless cause of death, and murder.

Toys for Tickets at Sterling Public Library

Bring your favorite toy to the Sterling Public Library, this is for the kids, by the way, from now through Saturday, November 13, show it to the librarian and you'll get a ticket to the Saturday movie on November 13. The movie starts at 2 p.m. Now this part's for the grown ups: if you want to donate a toy to project Christmas Truck, bring a toy to the library on the 13th. Again, for the kids, anybody who donates a toy will get their name put into a drawing for a DVD copy of Toy Story 3. The library's providing the popcorn, you provide your own drinks. Community Policing Meeting Coming Up on November 10

The Fort Morgan Police Department is planning a Community Meeting at the Morgan Community College on November 10th. The meeting is from 6:30 to 7:30 in the Bloedorn Lecture Hall. Chief Roger Doll said such things as crime trends, sex offender registration, department structure, police programs and anything else that residents want to talk about with respect to the department. He said its the second year the police department has hosted community meetings and wants you to attend.

Inmate Found Dead Yesterday at SCF

The Sterling Correctional Facility is again in the spotlight, this time with the death of an inmate. Officials said that 51 Michael Anthony Carey was arrested on Wednesday and found dead in his cell yesterday. Carey was arrested in two sexual assault charges from the 1990s. The spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, Katherine Sanguinetti said Carey's death was discovered around 1:30 yesterday afternoon, and now the coroner will determine how he died. After he was arrested and jailed, Sanguinetti said that prison officials asked Carey if he wanted to be removed from general population, but he declined. She said even so, his death is being investigated as a suicide.

Sherman St Closed

The Sherman Street railroad crossing is closed from Burlington Avenue to Railroad Avenue until next Thursday, November 11. The closure is for median construction as part of the city of Fort Morgan's railroad quiet zone project. The work will be done between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. each weekday, so plan accordingly.
The project will put medians at the crossings so that drivers don't drive around crossing barricades. That means that trains can pass through the crossings without sounding their horns.

Gov-Elect Hickenlooper Says Positive Campaign Pays Off

Colorado Governor-elect John Hickenlooper says the best part of his election night victory was proving how positive campaigns can work. Hickenlooper also says the governor's race was "topsy-turvey" with issues on the Republican ticket and former Congressman Tom Tancredo's American Constitution Party bid. Hickenlooper ended up winning with over 50-percent of the vote.

Buck Concedes

Republican Ken Buck conceded yesterday afternoon to incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet in the race for Colorado Senate. In a statement, Buck says he's grateful for all the support he received. Bennet says the election was not about sending a political message to Washington, but to help Coloradans. The race was considered too close to call for most of election night and Wednesday. Bennet ended up winning with 48-percent of the vote.

Sterling Rec Center Open on Veterans' Day

On Thursday, November 11, the Sterling Recreation Center will be open regular hours. The Riverside Cemetery Office, Overland Trail Museum, Sterling Public Library and the Parks, Library and Recreation Office will be closed in observance of Veteran’s Day.

Drug Task Force Breaks Up Major Meth Ring

Authorities working in Thornton yesterday disbanded what they called a "major methamphetamine ring." The North Metro Drug Task Force said they arrested 15 people from three metro neighborhoods as part of a six-month investigation. Cops confiscated two ounces of meth with a retail value of about four-thousand dollars. They say about five more arrests could be made.

Seniors Plan Trip to See "Nutcracker"

Start your holiday season off right with a trip to The Nutcracker! The Senior Center is sponsoring a trip to the Nutcracker Ballet. Standoff Ends with "I Gotta Go!"

A Pueblo teenager who was a suspect in a Monday night shooting engaged authorities in a six-hour stand-off Wednesday, ending it when he had to go to the bathroom. Police say they went to the 17-year-old's early Wednesday as he was a suspect a shooting Monday night. Officials say they waited with guns ready trying to get the teen to surrender, which he agreed to do around 9 a.m. when he said he had to use the bathroom. Nobody was hurt in either the shooting or the standoff.

Several Groups Hurt by Ritter Budget

Smokers, students, state employees and people who use state parks will feel the pain of Colorado budget cuts next year.
Governor Bill Ritter laid out his plans Tuesday for a 19.1 billion dollar budget to cover a projected 715 million dollar revenue deficit. The current budget 18.2 billion dollars.

The budget totals don't count about $1.5 billion in duplicate spending, which includes in-house legal services. Duplicate spending items show up in the budget twice: As income for the department providing the service and as expenses for the department getting the service.

Ritter's proposal largely protects higher education with $555 million in state funding, but colleges and universities still face a cut of $89 million in federal stimulus funding. It also includes a projected 9 percent increase in tuition that must be approved by university boards for next year.

However, the $43 million budget increase for public schools will only cover a portion of the $130 million total cost of inflation and enrollment increases, including a $53 million decline in local property taxes because of the economic downturn.

Other cuts include:

— Elimination of $2.7 million a year state funding for state parks, resulting in a $1 increase in the daily park fee.

— Continuing a suspension of the cigarette sales tax exemption of 2.9 percent per pack costing smokers $31 million a year.

— No automatic pay increases for state employees and a cut in benefits for part-time state employees. As of October, the state had 3,300 fewer state employees than it had two years ago.

Ritter said his plan will keep Colorado on the road to sustainable economic growth. Over the past three years, the state has covered $4.5 billion in revenue shortfalls because of the Great Recession.

"While our economy is stabilizing, increases in Medicaid, children's health care, student enrollment and other non discretionary caseloads continue to outstrip revenues," Ritter said.

Lawmakers won't vote on the budget until March.

Rep. Mark Ferrandino, head of the legislature's Joint Budget Committee that sets state spending priorities, said the legislature predicts $300 million less revenue next year than the governor's budget, and that could force more cuts.

"I think the governor's proposed budget is certainly making some difficult choices. The governor lays out a good starting point," he said.

Ferrandino said public schools will face cuts because they make up 43 percent of the state general fund budget.

Ugly 3 Go Down in Ugly Defeat

The "Ugly 3" went down to ugly defeat last night as more than 70 percent of voters said no to Amendments 60 and 61, and nearly 70 percent said no to Proposition 101. Amendment 60 sought to keep property taxes from ever going down while 61 wanted to prohibit the state from borrowing and also limited local jurisdictions from borrowing for only ten years. And 101 sought to reverse a 2009 law that approved hikes in auto registration fees.

4th Congressional Race Goes to Gardner

Incumbent Betsy Markey has lost her race against Cory Gardner in Colorado's 4th Congressional District. Gardner's victory wasn't unexpected because the district, which makes up most of the area around both Denver and Colorado Springs, has long voted Republican. Gardner says his victory is for every Coloradan.

"...who worked hard for real solutions to get our country back on track creating jobs and economic opportunity for every single one in this country."

Gardner also says his victory is about the "idea of America" and that it can "always do better." He adds Republicans have a solemn obligation to "each and every" generation to make sure there are always opportunities in the future.

Hickenlooper Wins Governor's Race

Democrat John Hickenlooper has emerged victorious in the race for Colorado governor. Hickenlooper says he's going to remember how important it is to work for the people as governor.

He told the crowd last night, "I think of the dairy man who gave us a tour of his farm in Logan County, the toymakers we visited in Fort Collins, the farmers and small businesses that the owners I met all over Colorado."

Hickenlooper also says he wants to bring people together to tackle the problems the state has and believes partisan politics won't work. The race for Colorado governor took a rather bizarre turn in July when former Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo announced he was running on the American Constitution Party ticket due to problems with Republican Dan Maes. Maes saw his Republican support essentially evaporate as many GOPers threw their support behind Tancredo. Maes was still able to draw in over 140-thousand votes for governor.

Gov Candidates Make Last Minute Push for Votes

Colorado's gubernatorial candidates made their final push to win votes before today's election. Tom Tancredo held two rallies yesterday in Centennial and Parker. John Hickenlooper and running mate Joe Garcia were here in our area, Fort Morgan, Yuma and Burlington. Dan Maes didn't have any events yesterday, but is using to sway voters his way.

Local Students Receive FFA Degree

Six Sterling students received the Future Farmers of America or FFA's highest award last month. Joshua Sonnenberg, Stephanie Roth, Justin Bartlett, Hanna McKay, Mark Lieberknecht and Emily Mollohan all received the American FFA Degree at the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis last month. The degree focuses on their leadership skills and their achievements.

Ponzi Scheme Mastermind Pleads Guilty To Charges

The alleged mastermind of a financial scheme that bilked several wealthy Denver investors of millions has plead guilty to his crimes. A shackled and prison jumpsuit-clad Sean Mueller spoke softly as he entered his guilty plea yesterday to racketeering and securities fraud and theft in Denver District Court. Mueller faces up to 40 years in prison for running a 70-million-dollar ponzi scheme that included high-profile investors like former Denver Broncos football player John Elway. Sentencing is set to begin December 6th.

"Done Fire" Almost Contained

The "Dome Fire" that burned almost 100 acres in Boulder is just about full contained. Authorities said the wildfire that started Friday should have been almost 100-percent contained as of late last night. Fifty firefighters were on scene conducting clean-up efforts of the blaze that caused the temporary evacuation of about 18-hundred residents. Officials say the fire has burned about 84 acres.

Nobody Hurt in Car-Combine-Train Crash

Nobody was seriously hurt in a crash last week that involved a car, a combine and a train. Colorado State Patrol said that 69 year old Glen Brown of was heading east on Highway 6 and as he approached a combine coming the other way, he clipped the machine, sending his car off the road and onto the railroad tracks. Before it could be removed from the scene, Brown's car was hit by an oncoming train. He got out of the car before the collision with the train. The train had minimal damage. The combine operator, 36 year old Allen Hutt of Atwood was not hurt, but Brown was cited for careless driving.

Hickenlooper and Garcia in Fort Morgan Today

Denver Mayor and Democratic Gubernatorial candidate John Hickenlooper and his running mate Joe Garcia will be in Fort Morgan today. They 're set to be at the Country Steak Out at 4:30 p.m.

Overland Trail Museum Holds Wild West Justice Day

Wild West Justice Day is coming up at the Overland Trail Museum. On November 6 you can find out what it was like to witness a crime and then be part of an authentic 1890's trial, and it'll be presided over by a real judge. This fun and educational program is recommended for children 5-11 years old and its on Saturday, November 6, from 10 a.m. to noon.
