Former Platteville Police Chief Scott Smith turned himself into the Morgan County Detention Center last night, charged with felonies of identity theft and embezzlement. Smith was wanted on a statewide warrant out of Weld County, so he could turn himself in anywhere in Colorado. Reports indicate that Smith resigned from his job and it was posted on the Platteville website. Smith will be in court on December 6.

Oil prices rise on holiday sales, Europe hopes
NEW YORK (AP) - Oil prices climbed above $98 per barrel Monday after shoppers pumped up holiday retail sales in the U.S., and investors bet that Europe would find a last-minute solution to its financial crisis.
Benchmark crude rose $1.44 to end the day at $98.21 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil - including much imported by U.S. refineries to make gasoline - rose $2.26 to finish at $108.02 a barrel in London.
Benchmark oil has recovered much of the ground it lost since Nov. 16, when it hit $102.59 a barrel. Prices rebounded Monday following strong holiday sales in the U.S, where shoppers spent nearly $1 billion more on Black Friday than they did a year ago. The robust weekend sales are a promising sign that consumers are opening their wallets a little wider.
"The U.S. is probably doing better than we gave it credit for," PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn said. "Consumers are buying more, and that's going to get manufacturers to produce more products, and it'll take more energy to make and distribute those goods."

One Inmate Dead, One Inmate Suspected
Officials at Sterling Correctional Facility say one inmate is dead, another being held in connection with the death. Katherine Sanguinetti, who is the spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections said the victim's body was found early Friday morning in his cell, which was in the minimum security part of the prison. Its also that part of the prison where death row inmates are housed. The prison has locked down Unit 3 of the prison, and inmates were being fed in their cells as the investigation continued. The suspected inmate has been separated from the rest of the prison population. Another inmate was killed in January 2010 at SCF.
GOP decry Colorado legislative maps that pit incumbents
DENVER (AP) — Colorado Republicans are furious over legislative districts proposed by Democrats that would pit several incumbents against each other in races next year, including GOP leaders in the House and Senate.
Pairing same-party incumbents in next year's contests could increase Democrats' five-vote advantage in the Senate and jeopardize Republicans' one-vote edge in the House.
A bipartisan commission worked Monday on drawing maps to submit to the state Supreme Court. Justices rejected their previous attempt.
Republicans cried foul after Democrats suggested seven House districts that pair incumbents. Four Senate incumbents would battle for two seats. GOP House Leader Amy Stephens would face another Republican, as would Senate Republican Leader Bill Cadman.
Democrats insist their goal is to follow the court's direction to minimize splitting cities and counties.
Commissioners will vote on maps Tuesday.

CSU student's death tied to suspected heroin
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — An 18-year-old freshman at Colorado State University found unresponsive in his dorm room has died.
The Coloradoan reports that 18-year-old Sean William McGowan of Spring, Texas, was found unresponsive in his Summit Hall room Monday morning. He was taken to Poudre Valley Hospital, where he died.
The Larimer County Coroner's Office says the death appears to be drug-related. An autopsy was performed Monday afternoon.
Deputy Coroner/Investigator Greg Fairman told the newspaper that he found suspected black tar heroin in McGowan's clothing and needle tracks on his arms. Fairman said there were no signs of contagious disease.
McGowan was a freshman studying English.
