City Council to Meet Less Often
The Fort Morgan City Council will reduce its meeting schedule to twice a month, after Council members voted Tuesday, Sept. 6, to switch to two regular meetings per month on a trial basis.
The City's Charter requires Council to meet twice monthly, on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. In recent years, however, Council has customarily also held work sessions on the second and fourth Tuesdays.
The regular meetings are sessions at which Council can take action and vote on City business, while work sessions are for informational and discussion items and Council can take no formal action. In the past, issues discussed at work sessions would then be scheduled for a formal vote at a later regular meeting.
The new schedule aims to streamline the process of conducting the City's business by holding just the two regular meetings, at which Council will be able to take action on any item on the agenda. Any agenda item can also be deferred to a later meeting if Council needs more information, wants to solicit public feedback, or otherwise feels compelled to postpone a final decision.
As always, all meetings of the City Council are open to the public.
City Council voted unanimously to enact the new schedule of meetings immediately on a trial basis. The system will be re-evaluated at the end of the year.
Anyone who has questions about the new City Council meeting schedule can call City Clerk/Public Information Officer John Brennan at (970) 542-3963.

Effort to repeal CO's gay marriage ban dropped
DENVER (AP) — An effort to repeal Colorado's gay-marriage ban has been abandoned by college students who won state approval to petition the idea onto ballots next year.
Gay marriage proponent Mark Olmstead of Aurora confirmed reports Thursday that he will give up an attempt to get some 86,000 signatures needed to get the question on 2012 ballots.
In July, state ballot officials gave Olmstead clearance to seek signatures to undo a gay marriage ban approved by voters in 2006. The suggested amendment would have allowed people to marry regardless of gender.
The measure didn't have the support of prominent gay-rights groups in Colorado, which planned to instead push for a civil-unions bill in the Legislature next year.

Hickenlooper: 9/11 event with band will be somber
DENVER (AP) — Gov. John Hickenlooper says an event he's co-hosting to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will honor those who died and those protecting the country, but it also will recognize America's will to survive.
The Beach Boys are set to play at the free event Hickenlooper is co-hosting with Denver Mayor Michael Hancock on Sunday at Civic Center Park, which will also have concessions and a beer garden.
But Hickenlooper said Thursday that the program will start with a somber remembrance ceremony with a military flyover, taps and a 21-gun salute.
The Beach Boys, Colorado Symphony and musician Tyler Ward are set to perform.
Hickenlooper says terrorists are threatened by Americans' freedom, and organizers wanted to celebrate the freedoms the U.S. represents.

Calatrava withdrawing from Denver airport project
DENVER (AP) — Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava says he and his firm are withdrawing from working on Denver International Airport's $500 million south terminal redevelopment project.
Calatrava's firm, Festina Lente, sent a letter Wednesday to aviation manager Kim Day that said Calatrava's team feels the project lacks sufficient funding, has an unrealistic schedule, and is plagued by divisions between the design team, airport representatives and program managers for the project's prime contractor.
The Denver Post got a copy of the letter through the Colorado Open Records Act.
Calatrava last year revealed his light, airy terminal design and vision for an iconic bridge to carry a train from downtown Denver to the airport.
The airport has paid Calatrava and his firm about $12.8 million for design work.
Officials say they plan to proceed with those designs.

$9 million worth of pot removed from Colorado forest
DECKERS, Colo. (AP) — Local and federal authorities say they found about 3,000 marijuana plants in the Pike National Forest with a street value of $9 million.
The U.S. Forest Service and the Douglas County sheriff's office said Thursday no one has been arrested yet in connection with the illegal growing operation southwest of Denver.
Officials say crews from the Colorado National Guard helped fly the plants out of the forest.
Crews also dismantled a drip irrigation system for the crop.
Forest Service special agent Laura Mark says large-scale marijuana operations have been found in Colorado over the last three years and are believed to be connected to illegal growing that has spread on public lands in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Utah.
