Nobody Hurt in Semi Fire

Nobody was hurt, but a semi cab was destroyed when it caught fire yesterday afternoon. Police said the semi was heading west on Interstate 76, three miles east of Fort Morgan when the fire broke out. They said the driver saw the fire, pulled to the shoulder, and got out safely. Police said the cab was totaled, but firefighters saved the trailer. There's no cause yet for the fire on the rig which was owned by Maverick Stimulation Company of Fort Morgan.

Weld Co Humane Society Over Full

Workers at the Humane Society of Weld County now have some 60 cats for which to find homes. Officers went to the home on 4th Avenue in Greeley several times, but the homeowner wouldn't answer the door after neighbors complained of the stray cats in the area. Police got a warrant and when they went in, the found the more than five dozen felines. Eighty-three year old Harry Huff apparently tried to keep up with the animals that police said was a situation that just got out of hand. The Humane Society said no more owner surrendered animals until the cats, and some 14 dogs have homes. They said the dogs were brought in after an eviction.

Udall Adds Criticism On visa Program

The US State Department is being pushed to improve its oversight of a half century old foreign-exchange visitor program that's become a guest worker program. The program is now being criticized for taking jobs from Americans. The Denver Post reports that the Democrat wrote to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton this week asking her to outline what steps the department has taken to end misuse of the J visa program that has more than 350 thousand foreign workers in U.S. jobs.

Teen Survives Fall

(Lakewood, CO) -- A 17-year-old boy is recovering after a 20-foot spill off Maxwell Falls. The unidentified teen was reportedly scooting on his bottom to the edge of the rock cliff yesterday, when he slipped over and fell on his back in the shallow water. He was airlifted to St. Anthony Central in Lakewood.

Citizens Help Bust Gang

(Walsenburg, CO) -- Some citizens are getting praise for helping authorities capture a fugitive, one of three siblings arrested after a national manhunt. Ryan, Dylan and Lee-Grace Dougherty [[ DOCK-ER-TY ]] are in Pueblo County Jail facing charges after they allegedly shot at a police officer in Florida and robbed a Georgia bank. Authorities say the three fired shots at officials during a high-speed chase on Interstate 25 north of Walsenburg yesterday that ended when their car flipped after hitting a tire deflation device. Officials say Walsenburg resident David Vucetich and his two friends tackled Ryan when he fled on foot, holding him down until officers arrived.

Dougherty Gang Captured Here

(Pueblo, CO) -- The "Dougherty Gang" is in custody, after an alleged crime spree that stretched from Florida to Colorado. Lee Grace Dougherty, a 29-year-old stripper, and her two heavily-armed brothers were arrested yesterday near Walsenberg, after one of them allegedly fired an AK-47 out the window of their car at pursuing officers. A series of tips from alert citizens led to the arrest.

Second Doc Busted

DENVER (AP) - A second doctor accused of overprescribing painkillers that led to the deaths of four patients in Colorado has been arrested in Florida.

The Colorado U.S. Attorney's office said that 53-year-old Eric Peper was arrested without incident on Wednesday at his home in Summerland Key, Fla.

A second doctor indicted in the case, Sam Jahani, was arrested Monday in Texas. He was released on bond after appearing in court in Beaumont, Texas.

A bond hearing for Peper is expected this week.

The doctors formerly operated clinics in the western Colorado cities of Delta, Montrose and Grand Junction. They've been charged with health care fraud, money laundering and dispensing controlled substances resulting in death. The indictments were unsealed Tuesday.

Numbers Adjusted at DIA

DENVER (AP) - Denver International Airport officials say not as many passengers traveled through the airport last year as they thought.

The airport initially reported a record 52.2 million passengers for 2010, but officials later learned of mistakes with one airline's traffic numbers. The airport said Wednesday that just under 52 million passengers traveled through the airport for 2010, which still set a record for annual traffic at the airport.

This year, more than 25.6 million travelers have used the airport through the first half of the year, which is up 2.6 percent from the same period last year.

Aviation manager Kim Day says it looks like the airport is on track for another record-breaking year. She says though fares are generally up around the industry, Denver remains a very competitive market.

Bear Breaks into Home

(Colorado Springs, CO) -- No one was hurt after a bear broke into a Springs home. Police say the bear got into the house on Ridgewood Avenue in the Old Broadmoor Neighborhood last evening through a window. Authorities say Department of Wildlife officials were called to the home. The bear was tranquilized and taken to another spot.
