Volunteers Replace Lightbulbs

On September 22nd, teams of volunteers consisting of one adult and three teens will be going door to door in Sterling offering to replace incandescent front porch light bulbs with more energy efficient compact flourescent bulbs. the Volunteers will also provide residents with information about low- to no-cost energy efficiency services, renewable energy resources, and green jobs information. In addition to being good for Sterling, it will also be good for the teens because the activity can fulfill the Colorado Department of Education's Individual Career and Academic Plan requirements for community service and contextual/service learning experience.

The Weld County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim of Sunday’s fatal motorcycle crash north of Greeley. 56-year old Nick Cassavetes of Nunn died last night after his motorcycle veered down an embankment and into a telephone pole just off the O Street exit from U.S. 85. Cassavetes was not wearing a helmet.

Hay Theft

Law Enforcement officials are warning rural residents to take precautions to protect their hay. Reports of stolen hay are starting to become more frequent. Hay theft has been an issue nationwide this summer due to the drought and significant increase in the cost of hay. Recently, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office received a report from a farmer located on East County Road 76 that someone stole 5-thousand dollars worth of hahy and damaged another 8-hundred dollars worth. The hay, both round and square bales, was stolen directly from the field. Investigators recommend hay be stored out of sight and in a secure location if possible.
