The end is near for the Sterling Public Library's Summer Reading Program, but there are still several events on the schedule. The final movie night of the summer was last night (Wednesday). There's still lots of adventure for everyone. Children's Librarian Denise Ladd will be sharing stories with the kids this week. The theme is construction and the group will use shapes to build a bulldozer. Friday is the deadline to turn in reading time. Participants get a chance to win the grand prizes for every level completed and turned in. Anyone who completes at least six levels is eligible to attend the closing program on July 30. Tickets for the closing program must be picked up by 5 p.m. this Saturday, July 27.

In a fast-paced meeting Tuesday evening, the Sterling City Council saw “a lot of talk, but not much action.” Discussion ranged from chickens in the backyard and ATVs on the City streets, to promotional banners along the streetscapes to beautify the community and “paws” painted along the road. Seeking more information on all of the topics, City Council members took no action. Following a presentation by the Sterling Booster Club to paint Tiger prints along the street, mainly along Elm Street towards Sterling High School, Council requested more information from both the Public Works Department and the Booster Club prior to any decision.

"I'm not scared if I'm prepared."

"I'm not scared if I'm prepared." That's one project supported by a more than $14.6 million grant that was awarded to The Colorado Department of Emergency Preparedness and Response to provide funding to 55 local public health agencies, 18 public health centers, 82 hospitals, 15 community mental health centers, and several other partners for emergency preparedness and response. This OEPR project provides kindergarten and first graders with preparedness kits, and activities to complete with their families, and was piloted last year in Colorado Springs near the Waldo Canyon burn area, where 5,000 preparedness kits were distributed, and will be expanded statewide this year. In addition, the funding supports the Cities Readiness Initiative, which helps agencies in large metropolitan areas develop plans to quickly dispense antibiotics in response to bioterrorist events.

More businesses are building in unincorporated Morgan County

More businesses are building in unincorporated Morgan County. That was the message from Planning and Zoning Administrator John Crosthwait during Tuesday's meeting of the Board of Morgan County Commissioners. He said commercial construction in unincorporated Morgan County is a little higher than last year, but residential construction seems to be lagging behind, with only six single-family homes built in the unincorporated part of the county, the first six months of 2013, down from the 18 homes built 2012. However, six commercial buildings were constructed this year so far, which is already above the five built in all of 2012, Crosthwait noted. Also during Tuesday's meeting, commissioners approved a fireworks display for Edward's Right Price Market for Aug. 10, to celebrate the store's 80th anniversary, and renewal of a hotel and restaurant liquor license for the Country Steak Out.

Investigators now know how a Montana-based helicopter crashed in southwestern Colorado. A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board released this week, says the helicopter, which was carrying a load suspended from a cable, overshot the intended drop site when the load hit the ground, before the aircraft plummeted to earth. The helicopter crashed July 16, killing the pilot. County officials identified the pilot as AJ Blain of Billings, Mont. Officials say the helicopter was owned by Billings Flying Service. The report didn't list the cause.
