Fort Morgan Council Suggests Combining Boards

Fort Morgan City Council is considering consolidating some advisory boards into one, with more members, but they want your input. At this week's meeting, the recommendation was made for a Citizen Advisory Board that would four boards: the parks and rec board, the library board, golf course board and the senior center advisory board. Council members say those boards have trouble getting people to show up and sometimes have no quorum to vote on issues. The recommendation for the new board is for 15 members, thereby having enough to vote on issues. The members would be from across the age and income spectrum.

Spending standoff continues at Colorado Capitol -- AP

A standoff between Colorado Democrats and Republicans over state spending has ramped up.

The GOP on Thursday called off plans to work for compromise on a spending plan for next year.

The matter in the state Legislature has to do with a nonbinding resolution on spending the Legislature usually adopts without controversy. This year, Republicans newly in charge of the House, changed the resolution to ratchet back what state budget-writers should plan to spend next year.

Democrats in control of the Senate balked, and the two sides were to begin ironing out differences Thursday. But the House changed course and spiked plans to compromise.

Democrats accused the GOP of showboating on spending because the resolution is largely symbolic. A deadline to recommend a spending plan has already passed.

Fort Carson soldier convicted in woman's slaying

A jury has convicted a Fort Carson soldier of first-degree murder in the death of a 19-year-old woman, whom he got to know over the internet.

The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that 23-year-old Robert Hull Marko, convicted Thursday, faces a mandatory penalty of life in prison without parole when he's sentenced Feb. 28. The jury convicted Marko of the rape and murder of Judilianna Lawrence in 2008.

Prosecutors say Marko raped Lawrence, bound and gagged her, tied her to a tree and slit her throat. Marko's attorneys argued that their client, who served in Iraq, is mentally ill and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Before the trial, Marko pleaded guilty two counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child in a separate incident.

Feds Now Taking Up Cause For Man Held In Pakistan

Federal officials have made a request to release a man with Colorado ties from custody in Pakistan. Raymond Allen Davis of Highland Ranch is being held in Pakistan where prosecutors say he is responsible for fatally shooting two Pakistani civilians a week ago in Lahore. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari personally Wednesday in an attempt to negotiate his release. The U.S. State Department contends Davis holds diplomatic immunity because the alleged shootings happened while he was working as a staff member at the U.S. Embassy.
