FEMA Flood Deadline Extended Again

The deadline for registering with FEMA for help after September's flood has been extended to Dec. 2.
That gives people affected by the flood about two weeks to register for FEMA grants and loans. The Ft. Morgan Times reports FEMA's repeatedly warned people to register even if they don't think they have any damage from the flood. If they find damage later, it would not be covered unless they register before the deadline. The extension applies to all 11 Colorado counties designated for federal individual assistance, including Morgan and Logan counties.

Sigg Gets Life

A judge ruled the Colorado teen who killed and dismembered a 10-year-old girl in the Denver area last year must spend the rest of his life in prison. 18-year-old Austin Sigg was sentenced today. Sigg pleaded guilty to the October 2012 slaying of Jessica Ridgeway in Westminster. The girl was abducted while walking to school, and human remains identified as hers were found five days later in a park. More of her remains were hidden in a crawl space in the home of Sigg's mother, where he lived. Sigg's also acknowledged attacking a 22-year-old jogger at a nearby park in May 2012.

New Poll of Guv Race Puts Hickenlooper in Lead, But...

A new poll shows Democratic Gov. Hickenlooper leading all GOP challengers by a handful of points, but 49% of Colorado voters don't think he deserves re-election. The Quinnipiac University poll released today also put Hickenlooper's approval at 48%. Hickenlooper leads former Cong. Tom Tancredo 46 to 41%, percent after being statistically tied with him in August. Hickenlooper also has similar leads over the other Republican candidates - Secretary of State Scott Gessler, state Sen. Greg Brophy, and former state Sen. Mike Kopp. The poll also showed 55% of voters disapprove of new gun restrictions, but overwhelming favor universal background checks.

Suncor oil refinery operators have agreed to pay $1.9 million to settle a lawsuit by federal and state authorities over a toxic spill that contaminated Sand Creek and the South Platte River. A consent decree filed in U.S. District Court says government authorities agree to drop further legal action unless the spill worsens. The settlement requires court approval after at least 30 days for public notice and comment. According to the Denver Post, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers and U.S. Department of Justice attorneys filed a civil lawsuit against Suncor seeking remedies for harm caused initial by a 2011 spill from a broken underground pipe beneath storage tanks.

Gun-control supporters who gathered at the Colorado Capitol are hoping the state's long debate over gun laws is over. The gun-control supporters on Monday asked the Democratic state Legislature not to revisit last session's gun-control package, which included expanded background checks and a limit on ammunition magazines. Two Democratic senators who supported the gun laws were recalled in September. A third faces a possible recall vote during the legislative session. Republicans are now a single seat away from controlling the state Senate and are already working on bill to repeal or change some parts of the gun package signed into law this year.

A construction worker has died after falling from a roof in Boulder. The Daily Camera reported yesterday that the 51-year-old man was working on the building Saturday and was later pronounced dead at Boulder Community Hospital. Authorities are trying to figure out how the man fell.
