About 25-thousand ears of corn were harvested by hand to benefit area food banks Saturday. Mike Kosman set aside two acres of his land for the project. Volunteers from around the state came to help with the harvest. The Food Bank of the Rockies is handling distribution to food banks across the state, including Caring Ministries of Morgan County in Fort Morgan. That means a portion of the corn is coming back to the county where it was grown.

The Larimer County Commissioners approved a measure yesterday that eases building restrictions and makes the permit process more user friendly. Commissioners are now considering requests from home owners for partial of complete fee waivers, and rapid repair to roads in neighborhoods destroyed by the flames.

Colorado prosecutors filed 24 counts of first degree murder and 116 counts of attempted first degree murder against accused theatre shooter James Holmes. He's also facing charges of crimes of violence and one count of possession of explosives. The number of charges reflects the various ways prosecutors can prove first degree murder...either premeditaion or extreme indifference to the value of human life. That also applies to the attempted first degree murder charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for November.

Law Enforcement Agencies are now barred from discussing any any subject or releasing any information that may be connected to the case. The move follows a leak by an anonymous law enforcement official to the media about a notebook the shooter allegedly mailed to a psychiatrist at University of Colorado.

"The Everbridge System", and it allows agencies to simultaneously call residents by telephone in the event of an emergency. The work will address potential flooding, rockslides, and run off of ash and debris. 40 People were transported to Denver area hospitals after what officials say was a mass food poisoning episode at The Denver Rescue Mission. The victims became violently ill after eating a turkey dinner on Sunday afternoon. The street were the Rescue Mission is located was closed for several hours while authorities checked to make sure there was not some environmental or airborne cause for the illnesses.

Beginning August 1st, the Morgan County Clerk and Recorder's Office will be sending out license plate renewal cards that have a new look. The cards won't have the blue return label sticker you're used to seeing. The changes were required by the United States Postal Service as the labels created issues with their service equipment. Now, you'll need to look for a white postcard. Its the only notice that is being sent out.

Liquor Store Burglary

Five people were arrested and a sixth suspect is being sought in connection with a burglary at Mid West Liquor on South Main Street in Ft. Morgan early this morning. Several liquor containers and a cash box were taken. A citizen saw the suspects leaving the store and reported it to police. Douglas Burr and Demitrius Sisneros, both 19, were taken into custody, along with 3 juveniles.

24 year old James Eagan Holmes, who lists his address as an apartment on the 16-hundred block of Paris Street in Aurora, is in custody in connection with this morning's shooting. The apartments are reserved for students, faculty and staff at University of Colorado, where Eagan enrolled in a graduate Neurosciences program in June of last year. A CU Spokersperson said he was in the process of withdrawing. Holmes graduated from University of California-Riverside in the spring of 2010 with a degree in Nueroscience. We know that his family is from San Diego. Nieghbors at the Aurora apartment complex describe him as quiet, withdrawn...a recluse. He is scheduled to appear in an Arapahoe County Court on Monday morning.

The latest reports say that 59 people were shot. Among the wounded are a child just 3 months old. Two UIS Airforce Reservists and One Navy service member were also wounded. Currently 12 people have been confirmed dead.

Witnesses report that Holmes didn't say a word when he entered the theatre and began his attack. Local police are being assisted by 100 FBI agents in the investigation. They've recovered two hand guns, one shotgun, and an assault rifle in connection with the case.

At Holmes apartment, investigators say devices that appear to be explosives and incendiary devices have been spotted. Police, fire and federal agents have set up on the roof of the apartment building next to the one occupied by the alledged shooter.

At a meeting earlier this week, a 9 percent increase was proposed. That would add more than 62-dollars to annual cost of water and sewer service for an average Greeley household.

Rainbow Bridge

The Ft. Morgan City Council has approved a plan to take over full ownership of Rainbow Bridge from The Colorado Department of Transportation. The city entered into a deal with C-DOT in 1990 for shared use of the bridge. The agreement was supposed to have been renewed every 5 years, but it wasn't. Now, C-Dot has decided that the bridge can't be used as an emergency route anymore, so they offered complete ownership to the city.The conveyance of Rainbow Bridge from CDOT to the city will also require a separate annexation process to make the land the bridge is on part of the city. Currently that land is part of unincorporated Morgan County.

The trial of Charles Wade is expected to wrap up as soon as this afternoon. Wade is accused of sexaully abusing a 13-year-old girl at his Sterling Apartment in 2010. If convicted, he faces 18 years to life in prison as a habitual defender. Wade has been convicted twice before on similar charges.

She is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Road Work Will Close I-76 Exits

From 6 am to 6 pm Monday, July 16, through Thursday, July 19, both exit ramps at I-76 and Barlow Rd. will be closed while C-DOT maintenance crews mill and overlay pavement on Barlow Rd. underneath the I-76 overpass. Both westbound and eastbound exit ramps off of I-76 will be closed at mile marker 82 for the four-day project. Since both exit ramps will be closed, exits from I-76 must be made at Exit 80 or Exit 86. Motorists are reminded to obey all road signs and flaggers and to drive SLOW for the Cone Zone.

Wildlife Officials Announce Fish Salvage at Julesburg Reservoir

State wilflife officials say the drought could result in a massive fish kill at the Julesburg Reservoir. Details from Darrell Moody...






Colorado Parks and Wildlife is announcing a public fish salvage at the Julesburg Reservoir beginning immediately. Due to high irrigation demand created by severe drought, the water level at the reservoir is expected to decline to a point that will likely result in a loss of the entire fishery resource. Water levels are expected to fall below the boat ramp by the third or fourth week of this month, eliminating access for trailer-launched boats. Due to the presence of quagga mussels at Jumbo Reservoir, wildlife officers cannot perform any salvage and translocation operations. All anglers must have a valid Colorado fishing license. No commercial fishing will be allowed. All size, bag and possession limits have been removed until the public salvage is terminated, which will be announced at a later date.

Alan Cass proved to be more than just an expert on Glenn Miller , but, in fact, is related to Glenn Miller through a family connection.

C-DOT Officials Urge Caution During Rainy Periods

Heavy rains over the weekend forced Colorado Department of Transportation officials to close a portion of I-25 near Dacono. West of Loveland, US 34 was closed because of a rock slide, however C-DOT spokeswoman Ashley Mohr says the water has since receded and crews were able to reopen the affected highways. All major highways in Morgan and Logan counties remain open, but Mohr says motorists should use caution when driving in the ran. She says in the areas affected by wildfires, there is no vegetation to hold the ground together and they're seeing washouts during periods of heavy rains.

Prewitt Reservoir Boat Ramp Closed

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials decided late last week to close the Prewitt Reservoir Boat Ramp for the remainder of the boating season. According to a release, the 2,431 acre reservoir is at full capacity, but the water level is too low for the boat ramp to be used safely. Anglers can still expect good fishing for walleye, channel catfish, black crappie, wiper, northern pike and rainbow trout. Wakeless boating will be permitted, but only small hand-launched watercraft are able to access the water. Officials have also suspended boat inspections at the Prewitt Reservoir for the remainder of the season.

US Rep Gardner to Meet With High Park Fire Victims

Congressman Cory Gardner will meet this aftrnoon with victims of the High Park Fire. Gardner will be in the Red Feather Lakes area to meet with residents who were affected by the massive wildfire. State Representative B.J. Nikkel and Larimer County Commissioner Lew Gaiter will also participate in the public meeting which is underway at this hour. Before the meeting, Gardner visited some of the areas devestated by the High Park Fire. He also met with Forest Service Officials to talk about firefighting efforts and ongoing recovery efforts in Larimer County.

Weld Co Water Woes

The battle over water in Weld County opened another front this week. Weld County Commissioners sent letters to approximately 40 senior water rights holders, asking them to give permission to Weld County Farmers to pump their wells. Governor Hickenlooper denied a request to begin pumping the wells last month, sighting legal concerns. The farmers say is they don't get water soon, they'll face millions of dollars in crop losses.

The air force C-130 tankers that were grounded after a crash over the weekend, were back in the air today battling fires across Colorado. Airforce officials said they grounded the specially equipped planes to review safety procedures with the crews. Two people died in Sunday's crash.

Brenda Lauer, The Vice President of Finance and Administration has accepted the position of Interim Vice President of Finance and Administatitve Services at Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs. her first day in the new office will be August 1st. Lauer has been with NJC since 1985.

Gov't Offices, Services Closed for Holiday

Many government offices will be closed Wednesday in recognition of Independence day. Federal, state, Morgan County, Fort Morgan and Brush city and Wiggins and Log Lane Village town offices will be closed. There will be no mail delivery or post office window service. There'll be not trash collection on Wednesday either. Trash normally picked up on Wednesdays will be picked up Thursday in Fort Morgan and Tuesday in Brush.

Law enforcement officials across the state are working overtime this week to crack down on impaired drivers. At least a half dozen DUI checkpoints were in place this weekend, and more enhanced enforcement efforts are planned through the holiday. Last year 551 people were arrested for driving under the influence during the 4th of July holiday.

Waldo Canyon Fire Update

The Wald Canyon Fire west of Colorado Springs is approaching 18,000 acres. Public Information Officer Tim Johnson says they're using everything they have to protect homes and battle the blaze...it's currently 55-percent contained...






Johnson says they're also utilizing fixed wing aircraft. The Waldo Canyon Fire has destroyed nearly 350 homes and has claimed two lives.

C-DOT Crews Working in Sterling and Greeley

The Colorado Department of Transportation will be working in several parts of northeast Colorado this week. In Sterling, crews are entering the home stretch of a project to repair the viaduct beneath US 6. Crews are also installing a new sidewalk with railing. The road will be closed down to one lane at different times during the week and delays are to be expected. The work should be completed sometime this month. On US 85 in Greeley, crews will be paving the shoulders and medians of a crossover between 5th and US 34. Lane closures are also to be expected on Thursday and Friday.
