Teens Rewarded for Turning in Found Money

So three 13-year- old girls find eleven hundred dollars. You think they kept it? Of course you do, but they did not. They're in Fort Collins and they found the bag of money in a field.
Amy Moreng, Claire Hooker and Elise Forzley took the money to Fort Collins Police and after thinking they'd hit the jackpot with the money, the really did hit the jackpot when the police chief gave each a letter of commendation for their honest. See, the money had bee stolen from Plato's Closet, and when owner Renee Jelinek found out, she gave each girl a hundred dollars. Chad Mahan of Windsor was busted for in January for allegedly robbing the business, but the money was not found until the teens found it.

Man Stops Break-in at Neighbor's House

There's being nosy, and there's watching out for your neighbor. This is the latter. When a man in Greeley saw a man and a woman breaking into his neighbor's house, he called police. Chad McMillian and Cassandra Balcome-Crawford were arrested on trespass and theft charges, and both were on parole when they were busted last Saturday. Now, the Weld County district attorney is expected to file charges today. The neighbor watched the two knock on the homeowner's door and then going into the garage. The pair had apparently stolen the clicker for the garage, the homeowner's wallet and keys. The pair fled in a tan vehicle, and police caught up with them and a busted them.

Colorado seeks disaster status for 2 more counties

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — Gov. John Hickenlooper is seeking a disaster declaration for two more Colorado counties because of drought.

Hickenlooper's request for Elbert and Douglas counties is awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The USDA already has approved primary disaster declarations for 17 Colorado counties, making them eligible for aid and benefits. Twelve more counties that are next to those counties can also receive help.

At a meeting Tuesday in Steamboat Springs, Colorado Water Availability Task Force co-chair Veva Deheza told state legislators that 39 percent of Colorado is facing some form of drought.

Governor, others to speak to western Colo advocacy group

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) — Governor John Hickenlooper and Senator Michael Bennet will speak at the fall meeting of Club 20, a western Colorado advocacy group.

Representative Scott Tipton will also speak at the Sept. 10 meeting in Grand Junction.

The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reports that Tipton, a Republican, will open the meeting, followed by the Democrat governor.

Bennet, also a Democrat, will speak during the luncheon.

Minor damage from magnitude 5.3 Colorado quake

VALDEZ, Colo. (AP) — Authorities are assessing the damage following a rare magnitude 5.3 earthquake that rattled the Colorado-New Mexico border but apparently caused no injuries.

Monday night's temblor in southern Colorado was the strongest to hit the state in more than 40 years. It struck just hours before a magnitude 5.9 quake in Virginia — also rare for that area — shook much of Washington, D.C., and the East Coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden reports the Colorado quake hit at 11:46 p.m. MDT about nine miles southwest of Trinidad. It was felt in a relatively large area of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

Register by Friday, Sept. 2nd for Girls Volleyball

Registration is due Friday, Sept. 2nd. The fee is $30 per participant.There will be two divisions: Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6. The program will begin with teams of 12 with two coaches for each team. Practices will begin the week of Sept. 6th and each team will conduct its own practices. Games begin Saturday, Sept. 17th. A tournament will be held at the end of the season.
