Researchers in Colorado have found a drug that could be a boon for Parkinson's patients. The Denver Post reports that Dr. Curt Freed and Wenbo Zhou say phenylbutyrate turns on the DJ-1 gene that protects dopamine neurons in the disease. The drug has been tested in mice and is now being tested on humans.

Fireworks May have Started Greeley Apt Fire
Fireworks for the Fourth may have bee fun, with lots of oohs and ahhhs, but fireworks are believed to have started an apartment fire in Greeley. Investigators say they think children playing with the fireworks may be the cause of a fire that started outside an apartment building when the bushes caught fire. Two dogs were killed in the fire and it took crews about two hours to put it out.
Ag Sec Salazar Visits Morgan County
Colorado Agriculture Commissioner John Salazar was here last week to talk about how area farmers can help out the new Leprino Foods Plant in Greeley. The plant needs milk, and there are plenty of dairy farmers in Colorado. Leprino is expected to add more than a thousand new jobs to the state's economy, and many of those here, in Morgan and Weld Counties, including support and secondary jobs. Leprino is contributing about 250 million dollars to the Colorado economy.
Smoke Testing Sewers in Fort Morgan Starts Friday
We told you a while back that Fort Morgan would be smoke testing the sewers, and now we know when they'll do it. It will start this coming Friday, July 8 in the northeast quadrant of the city, near Barlow Road and I-76. The test will push harmless, non-toxic smoke through sanitary sewers to check for any leaks. Door hangers will be placed at individual residences to give residents a 24 hour notices.

(Longmont, CO) -- A Longmont woman fears for her teenaged daughter's life after she ran away with a wanted felon. 4,000 ski at Colorado resort on July 4th
KEYSTONE, Colo. (AP) — About 4,000 skiers and snowboarders got in one last day on the slopes on Independence Day, the last day of the season at Colorado's Arapahoe Basin ski resort.
Resort spokeswoman Kimberly Trembearth says it's the latest the resort has closed since 1997, when it kept running till Aug. 10.
In 2003, the resort stayed open till July 2. It usually stays open until early June.
Arapahoe Basin is known for opening early and closing late because of its elevation, which captures snow sooner and holds onto it longer than many other resorts. The resort's high point is 13,050 feet above sea level.
Arapahoe Basin's website says it averages 350 inches of snow a year. The resort also uses snow-making equipment.

Coroner Randy Amettis Coroner ID's missing hikers as father, daughter
SALIDA, Colo. (AP) — Authorities have confirmed that two bodies found on a southern Colorado mountain were a man and his daughter who had been reported missing.
The Chaffee County coroner said Monday that 53-year-old Robert Michael Von Gortler and his 20-year-old daughter Makana died of blunt trauma to their heads and necks.
Coroner Randy Amettis ruled the deaths were accidental. He says the injuries could have been caused by a fall but that remains under investigation.
He says their was no indication either was hit by lightning.
Amettis says the pair died June 22, the day they began their hike up the 14,067-foot-high mountain.

Oklahoma pilot killed in S. Colorado plane crash
WETMORE, Colo. (AP) — Authorities say a 50-year-old pilot from Oklahoma was killed when a plane crashed in southern Colorado.
The victim was identified Monday as Sidney Emmert. Custer County Coroner Art Nordyke says he doesn't know where in Oklahoma Emmert lived.
The plane crashed Sunday near Wetmore, 100 miles south of Denver. Authorities say one passenger was aboard and was taken to a hospital with unspecified injures. The passenger's name hasn't been released.
A wildfire broke out at about the same time as the crash, but firefighters say they are still investigating whether the crash ignited the fire.
The fire grew to 100 acres by Monday. It's listed at zero percent contained but officials say crews have encircled it with an initial fire line and are strengthening that barrier.
