Man Killed as Car Plunges in to Cache La Poudre River
Speed may have been a factor in a crash that killed a 29-year-old Colorado man when the car he was in plunged into the Cache la Poudre River Friday afternoon. All we know is that the man is from Pine, since police won't release his name until they contact his next of kin. Colorado State Patrol said a second man in the car was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The crash happened near Grey Rock Trail in Poudre Canyon, west of Fort Collins around 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Police don't know which of the two men was driving.

School budget initiative signatures turned in
DENVER (AP) — Supporters of a proposal to increase funding for public education in Colorado have delivered their petitions to the Secretary of State's office.
Proponents say they turned in more than 142,000 signatures Monday. The Secretary of State's office will determine whether at least 86,105 of the signatures are valid before the measure can appear on the November ballot.
State Sen. Rollie Heath says he hopes the initiative he is proposing would at least shore up some funding for public schools and higher education while deeper changes to education are decided.
The initiative would raise Colorado's income and sales taxes, collecting about $3 billion over five years.

Disbarred Colo. attorney's son joins dad in jail
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — The son of a disbarred Lafayette lawyer accused of fleeing to Mexico to avoid prosecution on sex-assault charges has been arrested on accusations he tried to help his father escape from jail.
The Daily Camera reports that 19-year-old Andre Glenn Rogers is being held on $10,000 bond on suspicion of aiding an escape attempt. Prosecutors allege he had brought a bobby pin into a Boulder County courtroom with the intention of giving it to another inmate to help his father, Duane Glenn Rogers, escape.
The elder Rogers is accused of sexually assaulting a young girl from 2003 to 2008. He was found in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, earlier this year and was extradited back to Boulder County.
Duane Rogers remains in custody on $1 million bond.

Colo. House delegation split on debt ceiling bill
DENVER (AP) — Rep. Diana DeGette says the bill passed by the House to avert a federal government default is extreme and unbalanced, but Rep. Mike Coffman says it's a move in the right direction.
DeGette was the lone Democrat in Colorado's House delegation to vote Monday against the legislation, which would raise the nation's debt ceiling and trim spending. Reps. Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis voted for it, though Perlmutter said he wasn't happy with all of the bill.
Among Colorado Republicans, Coffman and Rep. Cory Gardner voted for it. Republicans Doug Lamborn and Scott Tipton voted against it, with Tipton saying the bill left $400 billion in proposed cuts up in the air.

Giffords Back in DC
WASHINGTON (AP) - It's about the only thing that could upstage a historic House vote on the debt-limit bill -- Rep. Gabrielle Giffords showed up.
Only minutes remained on the vote when she slowly entered the chamber for the first time since she was shot in the head in January. Her stunned colleagues erupted in loud, sustained applause. She got hugs and kisses, she mouthed "thank yous" and waved -- and then she voted for the measure and left.
In a statement released later, Giffords said she's been "deeply disappointed at what's going on in Washington." The Arizona Democrat said she just couldn't miss this vote. And she put it: "I could not take the chance that my absence could crash our economy."
Vice President Joe Biden called Giffords remarkable and "the embodiment of a strong, strong, strong woman."
