FDA fines Red Cross over blood safety issues
WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Administration has fined the American Red Cross $9.6 million for what it is describing as sloppy and unsafe blood management practices.
In April and October 2010, the FDA inspected 16 Red Cross blood centers.
The FDA said that while they did not find any evidence of actual harm to blood recipients, they did find ongoing problems that had the potential to endanger donors and allow potentially contaminated blood into the nation's blood supply.
For its part, the Red Cross says the problems primarily centered on an inspection at a Philadelphia site conducted 15 months ago and that the agency has since addressed many of the issues.
This was the second multi-million dollar fine issued against the Red Cross. In June 2010, the FDA fined the agency $16 million for similar issues.

You Can Be Mayor
You could be mayor! If you live in Wiggins, and you want to take it on, the job's open. Current Mayor Mike Bates said he won't run for re-election. The election is on April 3, Nomination packets will be available on February 13, and candidates will have to get ten signatures each in 20 days time to be nominated. Mike Bates said he became mayor to get the town through its water issues and since they're now being addressed, with wells being dug, and such, he said he sees no reason to run again. There are also town council seats up for grabs, and anyone who wins either a council seat or the mayor's race, is not term limited, so can run again.

FBI seeks help finding Montana teacher's body
UNDATED (AP) — Authorities are staying tight-lipped about their investigation into a Montana teacher who is missing and presumed dead, as they call on landowners in North Dakota's northwest corner and in far northeast Montana to look for her buried body.
Williston, N.D., Police Chief Jim Lokken said at a news conference Monday that officials are asking "landowners and landowners only" to search for signs of 43-year-old Sherry Arnold. He says they should be on the lookout for soil or grasses that appear disturbed — especially in areas with lines of mature or rotted trees.
The Billings Gazette reports authorities said little of the two Colorado men believed to be involved in the Jan. 7 disappearance of the Sidney, Mont., math teacher.
The two — 47-year-old Lester Vann Waters Jr. and 22-year-old Michael Keith Spell — are awaiting extradition to Montana.
Waters was arrested in Williston, and Spell was arrested in Rapid City, S.D.

Storm prompts closure of 2 US roads in Colorado
DENVER (AP) — A storm that's expected to dump up to a foot of snow in the high country moved into the Front Range and central mountains, prompting authorities to temporarily close two major highways into Wyoming and New Mexico.
Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Stacey Stegman says authorities closed Interstate 25 from Wellington to the Wyoming border because of blowing snow and icy roads Monday evening. Authorities also closed U.S. 285 at the New Mexico border because of blowing snow and low visibility.
