Group wants Boulder to be sister city with Nablus

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A group of Boulder residents wants their city to establish a sister-city relationship with Nablus in the West Bank.

The Boulder Daily Camera reported Sunday that the group plans a two-day conference in the West Bank starting on Dec. 27.

Backers say the conference will help meet a City Council requirement that Boulder have a strong citizen-to-citizen relationship with the other city to establish a sister-city relationship.

Boulder already has seven sister-city relationships.

Lisa Morzel, a member of the City Council's sister city committee, praises the group's enthusiasm but says sending a delegation to Nablus is premature.

She says council members have to discuss whether a relationship with Nablus is appropriate.

Kin of bus crash victims gather on anniversary

GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — Families of 20 children who were killed when a train hit a school bus outside Greeley in 1961 are gathering for an informal remembrance on the 50th anniversary of the tragedy.

The bus pulled in front of a passenger train on Dec. 14 of that year. Sixteen other children were injured.

The Greeley Tribune reported Sunday that no public service is planned but the families plan a reunion.

A memorial was dedicated at the crash site in 2007 after the now-closed Rocky Mountain News published a series on the tragedy.

Witnesses said the bus windows were covered with frost or condensation and the angle of the tracks made it difficult for drivers to see trains.

The bus driver was acquitted of manslaughter after witnesses testified he had stopped before crossing.

2 inert grenades found beside Denver street

DENVER (AP) — Police say they found two inert grenades in metal boxes beside a Denver street, but they say the public wasn't in danger because the devices couldn't explode.

Officer Vicki Ferrari says a bomb squad was called out Sunday after a pedestrian saw the boxes leaning against a tree and called police. Ferrari says the boxes looked like military ammunition cases.

She says she doesn't know if the grenades were dummies or replicas, or if they were real grenades with no explosives in them.

Ferrari says police are investigating but have no suspects.

Police closed off the area to traffic while the bomb squad was checking the boxes. No one was evacuated.
