Brush School Board Schedules Special Meeting for Saturday

The Brush Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting for tomorrow evening (Saturday, June 4) at 7:00pm at the District Administration Office. The board plans to go into executive session to discuss personnel matters including the retirement of Superintendent Priscilla Huston. The board agenda for the executive session also includes discussion of the High School Assistant Principal/Athletic Director, the district's Business Manager, the Learning Services Director, the Middle School Assistant Principal/Dean of Students and the Secretary to the Superintendent.

The school board will hold its regular meeting Tuesday evening.

Friday afternoon School Board President Don Dillehay said the board has received a letter from Superintendent Priscilla Huston expressing her intent to retire from education at the end of this month. Dillehay said the board will begin the process of replacing the superintendent.

Brush Superintendent Priscilla Huston to Retire

Brush Superintendent of Schools Priscilla Huston will retire at the end of June. Brush school board President Don Dillehay said Huston has written a retirement letter to the board that will be on Tuesday’s Board of Education agenda. Dillehay said the school board will begin the process of replacing the superintendent this week.

Platte River Rising

Logan County residents are being warned that levels in the South Platte River basin are expected to rise over the next couple of weeks. The Logan County and city of Sterling Office of Emergency Management officials say there is a potential for flooding because of the historic snow pack this year. OEM officials say people living in low lying areas should be ready to leave the area on short notice if river levels come up.

People Return to Homes After Fire Near Sterling

UNDATED (AP) — In northeastern Colorado, evacuations have been lifted for 44 homes near a smoky junkyard fire, which is almost out. And in southern Colorado, officials report progress against two wildfires that have collectively scorched 13,000 acres, or more than 20 square miles. Meantime, a fire sparked by lightning on the Colorado-New Mexico border is about 40 percent contained. A second fire at Purgatorie River Canyon northeast of Trinidad is 60 percent contained.

Governor approves changes to sweeping pot rules

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper has signed into law several changes to the nation's most exhaustive medical pot regulations without comment.

The Democrat signed off on extending Colorado's moratorium on new pot shops by a year, to the summer of 2012. The law also loosens restrictions on who may work in dispensaries, ending residency requirements for employees who don't own the dispensaries.

Hickenlooper's signing late Thursday came without comment or public notice. The governor has not responded to federal warnings sent by U.S. attorneys in Colorado and other marijuana states warning that states that implement pot regulations put state employees afoul of federal drug law.

Hickenlooper also signed into law new labeling requirements for edible marijuana and a ban on synthetic marijuana.

Unabomber Auction Nets Nearly 200-Thousand For His Victims

The auction of the personal effects of Unabomber Ted Kaczynski has earned nearly 200-thousand dollars for his victims. The online auction ended yesterday with the former UC Berkeley professor's journals going for more than 40-thousand dollars. Kaczynski pleaded guilty in 1998 to a mail bombing spree that lasted nearly 20 years, killing three people. He's currently being held in a "supermax" federal prison in Colorado.

Morgan Co Sheriff Looking for Wanted Man

Morgan County Sheriff's officials are looking for a man wanted on charges of Kidnapping and Sexual Assault. They've identified the man as Omar Mario Hernandez. They say he's an Hispanic man, 29 years old, 5'7" and 130 pounds. Hernandez has a tattoo of woman wearing sombrero with name ‘HERNANDEZ” underneath on upper right arm, tattoo of playboy bunny on upper left arm. If you know where Hernandez is, call the Morgan County Sheriff's Department.

Flags at Half Staff Today for Soldier

Colorado Governor Hickenlooper has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on all public buildings statewide from sunrise to sunset today in honor of United States Army Corporal Brandon M. Kirton who died on May 18 in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense said 25 year old Kirton, from Centennial, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. On May 20, 2011, Spc. Kirton was posthumously promoted to corporal.
