Gov. Hickenlooper's picked Denver District Judge William Hood III to join the Colorado Supreme Court, replacing retiring Chief Justice Michael Bender. Hood will serve an appointed term of two years, then face voters for a retainment election to a possible 10-year term. Hood is Hickenlooper's second appointment to the state's high court. Bender retires Jan. 7, and Justice Nancy Rice will take his place as chief justice. The 50-year-old Hood's been a Denver District Court Judge since 2007.

"So Help Me God" Dropped from AF Academy Oath
Air Force Academy cadets are no longer required to say "so help me God" at the end of the Honor Oath.
School officials say the words were made optional after a complaint from the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, an advocacy group. Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson says the change was made to respect cadets' freedom of religion. The oath states, "We will not lie, steal or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does. Furthermore, I resolve to do my duty and to live honorably, so help me God." The academy says cadets are required to take the oath once, when they formally enter the school after boot camp.

Logan Co. overnight meeting to center on flooding
This coming month's Logan County Citizens' Oversight Committee meeting focuses on response to last month's flood.
The Journal-Advocate reports representatives from a variety of agencies and organizations have agreed to participate.
These same people worked on many issues during a week that included very high river levels and a no flush order.
The meeting takes place Nov. 5 at the Northeast Colorado Health Department in Sterling at 5:30 p.m.
