New Belgium Brewing boosting canning capacity

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — New Belgium Brewing Co. is adding on to its bottling hall so it can put more beer in cans.

The maker of Fat Tire Amber Ale and other bottled beers first introduced cans of Fat Tire in 2008. Its Sunshine Wheat and Ranger IPA now also come in cans, and New Belgium spokesman Bryan Simpson says sales have been better than expected.

The Fort Collins-based brewer said Thursday it is breaking ground on a 16,000-square-foot can line addition to its bottling hall. Its new canning system should be able to fill up to 360 cans per minute, up from 60 per minute today.

New Belgium has said the cans give customers an option for taking its beer to swimming pool or other sites that don't allow glass bottles.

High bacteria levels close Denver-area swim beach

LITTLETON, Colo. (AP) — The swim beach at Chatfield State Park in the south-Denver area has been closed because of high bacteria levels.

State officials say the beach was closed Thursday after routine water quality tests showed high levels of the bacteria E. coli. They say recent heavy rains and high temperatures might be the reason.

The results from new tests are expected Friday.

The beach will be reopened if the bacteria levels meet state health standards.

Pot legalization effort under way in Colorado

DENVER (AP) — An effort to legalize pot next year in Colorado is under way.

Pot legalization backers started gathering signatures Thursday for a constitutional amendment seeking to authorize pot for recreational use in Colorado.

Supporters need about 86,000 signatures to get the question on ballots next year. They start collecting signatures Thursday afternoon in Denver.

If approved, the amendment would make pot legal in small quantities for adults over 21 starting in 2013. Sixteen states allow medical marijuana, but Colorado's proposal would set up a federal showdown over recreational pot rules. Backers of the amendment say the time is right to seek full legalization.

Some pot activists say the measure includes too much regulation and plan to propose a rival suggestion.

Colorado voters rejected a marijuana legalization measure in 2006.

Colorado monsoon ushers in storms

DENVER (AP) — Thunderstorms hit the Denver area with a fury Thursday, flooding streets and underpasses and stranding drivers in stalled-out cars.

Rains and lightning also swept through southern Colorado. The U.S. Women's Open at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs was suspended because of thunder and lightning.

North of Denver, in Boulder County, rain unleashed mudslides down mountainsides where a wildfire last fall burned away trees and other vegetation. The Daily Camera reported that law enforcement officials reported mud about 100 yards wide and 4 feet deep on a road west of Boulder.

Xcel Energy reported 28,000 customers in the Denver area lost power Thursday afternoon from the storms. A recorded message from company spokesman Mark Stutz reports power had been restored to all but 9,000 customers by 11 p.m.

Stutz said extra crews were working through the night to restore service, but the company expects power won't be restored to everyone until about 9 a.m. Friday.

Stutz said the outages were caused by downed wires and branches and trees that had fallen on power lines.
