Library Friends Book Sale

Great books - great prices!

The Friends of the Library will have a Book Sale on Saturday, Sept. 17. The sale for members only will be held from 9 am to 10 am. The general public may purchase items from 10 am to 2 pm. The sale will be held in the Children’s Library of the Library/Museum Services building at 414 Main St. in Fort Morgan.

Books for all ages will be offered. Items for sale include paperbacks, hardbacks, CDs, DVDs, audio books, videotapes, cassettes, and artwork.
Special items highlighted are Christmas crafts books, adult paperback fiction, history, and sports. Newer books will be offered for prices between $1 and $3.
There are even some free materials! Special prices include $7 for a flat of paperbacks, $1 for any 5 paperbacks (of regular size), and $1 for any 2 hardbacks (of regular size). This is a great opportunity to purchase items at very low prices. Funds from the Friends Book Sale are donated back to Library/Museum Services.

Volunteers Needed!

The Fort Morgan Library/Museum is seeking volunteers to help with various jobs, some of which include inventory of items, computer data entry, Museum store sales, shelving, leading tours and more!

Flexible shifts are available. Applicants must complete a short registration form, listing their interests and experience. If you have an interest in history and helping with important work, call Cathy Bosley at the Library/Museum at (970) 542-4001 or stop by the Library/Museum at 414 Main St.

Musice From the Library

Sterling Public Library now provides downloadable music to anyone with a library card in good standing. Sterling Public Library joined with Library Ideas’ Network to offer access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists.

The service will allow Sterling Public Library to increase the size and diversity of
its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs. Sony Music Entertainment is a global recorded music company with a roster of current artists that includes a broad array of both local artists and international superstars.

Under the agreement, registered library card holders of Sterling Public Library can
download up to 3 songs per week. The Friends of the Library are providing the financial commitment for this service through the end of the year.

Investigators Looking for Clues to Fire

Several groups were shooting in the area where a 17 acre fire burned on Monday in the McGrew Allotment on the Pawnee National Grassland, and now investigators are looking for who might have been there then. The area is just west of the junction of Weld County Roads 57 and 96, and the fire was on private and National Forest System lands. Several local volunteer fire companies were on the scene and the fire was completely contained. If you know anything, call Lenora Arevalos at 970-222-5241.

Flags at Half Staff on Sunday

From sunrise to sunset, on Sunday, September 11, flags will be a half-staff on all public buildings throughout Colorado, per Governor John Hickenlooper's orders. The governor also called for a Moment of Remembrance statewide at 11 a.m. Sunday. That means sirens and bells should sound, it should not be a moment of silence. Hickenlooper said that the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the United States is a solemn occasion, and that we should remember and honor those who died. Hickenlooper went on to say that the country should reflect on its strength and resilience.

Bath Salts Ban Coming To Southern Colorado

(Colorado Springs, CO) -- Sales of bath salts in Colorado Springs will fizzle out in less than a month thanks to a new federal ban. The Drug Enforcement Administration yesterday imposed a ban set to begin in October after the agency deemed the over-the-counter substances a, quote, "imminent hazard" to the public. But smoke shops in southern Colorado continue to sell bath salts, found under brand names like "Bliss," "White Lightning," and "Ivory."

Denver DA: Fort Carson Soldier Met Killer Earlier In Day

(Fort Carson, CO) -- The Fort Carson soldier killed outside a Denver motel met the his eventual killer at a bar earlier that evening. The "Denver Post" says the city's district attorney office has concluded Sergeant Anthony DiSilva met his accused killer Ricky Scott the night of July 23rd. DiSilva planned to meet his father the following morning at the Denver Motel 6 so they could drive home together to Columbia, Illinois.

Four More Cases Of Listeria Identified In Colorado Outbreak

(Denver, CO) -- Colorado health officials are saying four more cases of Listeria have been identified recently. One new case was reported yesterday in addition to three cases over the holiday weekend, bringing the total to 13 since August 1st. Symptoms of listeria include fever and muscle aches, diarrhea, headache, stiff neck, confusion and convulsions.

Ken Caryl House Fire Leaves One Dead, Firefighter Injured

(Ken Caryl, CO) -- One person is dead and a firefighter is injured, after a house fire in Ken Caryl. The unidentified victim was found in a residence on Canyon Cedar Drive after the blaze was extinguished yesterday. Officials said the firefighter was injured after he slipped and hit his head. The investigation is ongoing.

"The Bold and the Beautiful" on location in Aspen

ASPEN, Colo. (AP) — The cast of "The Bold and the Beautiful" is in Aspen to tape some new episodes.

Taping of the CBS soap opera started Wednesday and will run through Friday.

The Aspen Daily News reports the resort town will serve as the backdrop to a story line about a love triangle involving some of the show's main characters.

Among the locations set to be included are the top of Aspen Mountain and the home of the show's executive producer and writer, Brad Bell.

The Aspen episodes will air starting Oct. 5.

Police: No ticket for teen whose legs were severed

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — Longmont police say they won't write a trespassing ticket for a 17-year-old Colorado State University student whose legs were severed when she tried to hop a moving freight train but fell under the wheels.

Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur said Wednesday that Anna Beninati has plenty of other things to worry about. He adds, "We're a compassionate police department."

Two males who planned to board the train with Beninati were cited for trespassing on railroad right-of-way. Police want to cite a third male who was with the group but don't know where he is.

Satur says police will seek an arrest warrant if he doesn't voluntarily come to the police station. His name hasn't been released.

Beninati was hospitalized in serious condition after the Monday accident.

She is from Sandy, Utah.

2 former Avs killed in crash of Russian jet

DENVER (AP) — Two former Colorado Avalanche players were among those killed in the crash of a Russian jet carrying a top hockey team.

Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix (luh-KWAH') said Wednesday that the organization is "deeply saddened" by the deaths of Ruslan Salei (ROO'-slahn suh-LAY') of Belarus and Karlis Skrastins of Latvia.

Former Avalanche captain Joe Sakic (SAK'-ik) — now the organization's executive adviser — says he's in disbelief about the deaths of the two defensemen. Sakic says Salei and Skrastins were "unbelievable individuals and great teammates."

The Avalanche traded Skrastins to the Florida Panthers in February 2008 in exchange for Salei.

Skrastins played four seasons for the Avalanche, starting in 2003. Salei spent three seasons with the team.

Remains believed to belong to Colorado woman found

KEENESBURG, Colo. (AP) — Denver authorities say they've found remains believed to belong to a 19-year-old woman who disappeared earlier this year after leaving a nightclub.

Denver District Attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough says the remains were found Wednesday afternoon and that investigators were waiting for a positive identification and cause of death. Denver police received a tip about the case and had been searching a field near Keenesburg, about 40 miles northeast of Denver.

Police say Kenia Monge was at the 24K Lounge the night of March 31. Authorities say she was later seen at a gas station about two miles away around 3 a.m.

Kimbrough said investigators would be at the scene through the night.
